VIN differences between M1008 and M1028?

Does anyone have a handy guide to decoding the VIN info on the CUCV series trucks? I'm particularly interested in the differences between the M1008 and M1028, since they're almost identical at first glance.

I know someone posted about some 1028s that had the 200 amp charging system seen on the 1010 ambulance - is this also somewhere in the VIN? Or only on the data plates?

I'm pretty sure the TC on the M1028 is a NP205 vs. the NP208 found on M1008s. My M1008 has the drivers side door off an M1028 so the tag is wrong for my vehicle otehrwise i would rocommend checking that.

Cargo Truck, The M1008, M1008A1, M1028, M1028A1, M1028A2, and M1028A3 1-1/4 ton, 4X4, cargo trucks are. fight commercial trucks designed to provide standard tactical mobility and to carry cargo or passengers.

The M1028 is equipped to accept a 100 amp/28 v electrical system and S250 communications shelter and a communication kit.

The M1008A1 Includes a 100 amp/28 v communlcations kit.

The M1028A1 ls equipped wfth a New Process 205 Transfer Case which allows for the addition of a power take-off (PTO) unit.

The M1028A2 is an M1028A1 that hae been converted to rear dual wheel conflguration.

The M1028A3 is an M1028 whkh has been converted to rear dual wheel shelter carrier configuratlon and is equipped with a New Process 208 Transfer Case.

Inside the -10 manual is the spec list.. The big difference in the vins is from the M1009 which is a D1 and the D3 is the Pickup Ambu etc... You usually don't find any info other than the engine in the vin... The vin decoder is in the Civvy Parts book for the CUCV and the sticker inside the left front fender well tells all the options.

Quick and easy way: 4th character is the GVW indicator. It's an "H" on a M1028/A1/A2/A3, M1031, M1010, a "G" on an M1008/A1, and an "E" on an M1009.

The RPO codes in the glove box or looking in the engine compartment are the only way to tell the 200-amp system from the regular setup.

Only the M1031, M1028A1 and M1028A2 have the NP205 transfer case. All others have the NP208.

so to decode a CUCV M1009 vin number

1 1 = USA
2 G = General Motors
3 C = Chevy Truck
4 E = GVWR/Brake System 6001 - 7000 Hydraulic
5 D = military or CUCV
6 1 = Series 1/2 ton
7 8 = Blazer
8 J = 6.2L V8 Diesel
9 4 = character is a check digit to verify VIN accuracy using a mathematical formula
10 G = Model Year 1986
11 F = assembly plant Flint

As an aside, I thought my VIN number was 1G8ED18J4GF. I am guessing now after much research that I misread the C in the third digit as an 8. The vin was badly rusted from the wind shield being missing for a long period of time.

After I made the above post, I went out and looked at my paperwork for my truck. It is indeed titled as 1G8 mainly because that is what I turned in with a photo of the vin plate to the title bond people. It is a residue truck I bought from GL. I looked at the vin plate again and it sure looks like an 8 and not a C. Eight in the third position means Saturn now.

Does anybody or everybody else have an 8 in the third position? Did Saturn exist in 1986? I was hoping to get this nailed down as the definitive answer to this question since it is quite common for CUCV vin numbers to come back as invalid.

I've seen a few 1028's with the a/c compressor. and or the leece nevvile alternator. Mine has the two delco alternators like the 1008. Any body have any pics of this set up? And or a place to find these parts?

You are thinking about the 10th digit. It is the date code. The 4th digit is GVWR.

I have been working on this by going through old GL sales I have saved. I am going to post a new topic with the final results when I am through with it.

I was wondering if anyone knows if civi blazers have an 8 in the third position like all M1009's I have found? All pickups have a C and contract maintenance trucks have a B. Ambulances seem to have a C but I am looking for more examples before I post my final results.

The difference for the 3rd digit is a B is for Chevrolet, incomplete (like an M1031), C is just chevrolet truck. (like an M1008) This info is found in Section OA-2, general information in any GM service Maunual.

I have looked on GL at about 30 M1009's. They are all 8 in the third digit. I have a truck manual of a 1980 chev pickup I used to own at home I will have to look at it. If anyone has one from 1984 to 1986 and could scan it for me or fax it to me, I would appreciate it. Like I said before, I am trying to get the definitive answer for this because it is not uncommon for the vin number to come back as invalid when it is run through insurance companies and the like.

Vin model year may not match the trucks model year
Some trucks listed as 1986 have an H model year code.

That vin number is for a pickup not a blazer.

4th digit G = 8001 - 9000
6th digit 3 = 1 ton
7th digit 4 = 2 Door Cab
