voltage problem

Yesterday started up the hmmwv and booom blew the top off one of the batteries. Not sure what caused it. Replaced the battery and now my generator reads in the red. Voltage at the batteries not running is 28.2V and voltage running is 35.6! I checked the connections at the terminals and also the water level. I haven't done much to this since I got it, I did pull off one glow plug wire and glow plug controller connector before all this happened, but I put them back on.

200 amp alternator, is the voltage regulator likely? Just looking for ideas here.

Is it possible that the other original battery was the problem? I wonder if it had a short if it would cause the one that blew to take all the charge and blow. Thinking of pulling it out and having it tested. Does this seem logical?

Each battery tests at 13 V each...

pics of voltage regulator. Any ideas why it doesn't look like any of the other ones I see online. There are no external posts or wires and when I went to separate it from the generator it appears to be hard wired.

I would say your voltage regulator is a goner. The overvolt condition blew up your battery. If you run it again, more things will blow. Disconnect the alternator until repairs can be made.

Regulator is toast....I would replace the entire generator with the new style, that is a very early model, can't say I've seen one. You will be hard pressed to find a replacement regulator I think.
the new style reg is plentiful.

This might sound sort of dumb, but could I just get a generic 24v voltage regulator from the parts store and tap it off the generator in the meantime or is that dangerous/stupid/complex?

Take that alternator and throw it in the dumpster. Put a delco on it and your problems are solved

Delco 21si-- 74m is a member on here and he has them. This set up is a quarter of the price, wont over charge and fry your electronics, and can be rebuilt or replaced without having to re-mortgage your house. Single wire hookup and very little fab work. I've done this with my 5 ton as well and never looked back!
The military alternators are unreliable and expensive.

Infidel, have a part number on the pully? Perhaps the one off the generator will fit?

Something to think about before you start changing things out.
Why were you installing a 200 amp alternator ?
60's and 100 amps are cheaper then the 200's
What are your plans for the truck.
What engine is in it now? 6.2 ? 6.5?

What transmission does it have 3l80? 4L80 ?

If you have a 6.2 with a 3l80 do you ever plan on upgrading?
Chances are the 6.5 will come with a dual voltage alternator .

Replacing it with a military 200 amp dual voltage alternator will allow you to
Keep everything original.
Also have a 12 volt tap that doesn't screw up batteries.

I noticed the words reversible on the alternator any chance you wired it wrong ?

That picture was before I changed anything, it had the 200amp already in it. The truck ran ok the way it was wired. Its 6.2 with 3l80, no plans really just driving it back and forth to work here in town. I just want to get it running so I can use it for now.

Starter specialist on fleabay-- 3 1/8 d 7/8 bore 2 groove pulley, Under $20. It has a keyway in it, but you can still use it. Most alternators don't use keyways anymore.

The old military pulley will NOT fit.

Original pulley can work if bored properly to a 7/8" slip fit by a machine shop.

My local machine shop made a big deal out of drilling the hole-- that's why I didn't mention it. Yes it could be drilled out to 7/8. For me it was easier to just order one than deal with my machine shop clown.
