Water in trans fluid

Have a 2004humvee i was told came from auction. Transmission fluid is contaminated with water. Not sure how it goes water in it and how to diagnose. Engine was also seized and full of water when i got it. Thank you.

Well... It gets water from "fording" most likely. If the vehicle hasn't been started, maybe you can drain the oil and water and recover. The bad part is that oil floats on water. OR the good part is that oil floats on water - if you don't have much. The problem is that the disks that are attached to the metal are done with water based glue. So, you might start off okay, then start slipping...

Ok thank you. Am I correct that the cooling system has no way to contaminate it? I did run it briefly so fluid is pretty well mixed with the water.

I don't think it would be radiator fluid.
Should be easy enough to spot if it is...

I would definitely drain the transmission.
Sooner rather than later.

I always replace the pan any time I change the fluid, I have learned over time it saves me work because most pans have been over tightened and distorted.
They are cheap enough, if you do get one with a drain plug because when you drain the pan you only change about 4-5 quarts when the total capacity is around 14 quarts so you will likely have to drain and refill it several times to get enough water out of the transmission, depending on how much water is in there.
