Got rid of the original ignition and distributor. Went to an HEI unit which made a difference. The carb is a Carter 1 Barrel.

Ok.
Thanks. My jeep has the stock distributer and and also the Carter. I think mine needs a full rebuild as sometimes it leaks fuel from the shafts and such.
So how does it run now?

On my CJ5 with 232, I went with the Petronix electronic kit to install in the stock distributor and got rid of the Carter YF carb and replaced it with a Weber.
I tried to rebuild the Carter and it didn't run much better. From the research I've done, the Carter is temperamental and not a very good carb. The Weber was a good upgrade.
There are some other things to help a '74 232 run better but they will violate emission regulations.
