What do I need to get to positively identify the engine?The man who owns it said it had a Cummins in it.I thought I was going to look at a 5 ton.Is there a tag or something specific I need to get a pic of?He says it runs fine,I have a feeling that it might not have a title.It is kinda rough but I might be able to afford it.The seats are worn out and the troop seats are wasted but the dropside bed looked alright.Who is the maker of the multi fuel engine?Thanks.

Its a MULTI FUEL! 3 people made the engine White, Hercules and Continental. No way to tell besides looking at the engine tag on the right front side of the engine.

The air compressor has no relation to what model engine it is... The single barrel compressor was a replacement and the two cylinder compressor was found on all iterations of the MF... I see a new steering gear, in primer and this was part of the upgrade kit from the gasser engine in a lot of cases along with a new left fender...So, if it is a whistler it is a 1C and if not a 1D Both are the same engine with different sounds... I prefer the 1D without the obnoxious whistle and the need for ear muffins...and loud radios... What is the VIN?? the Multifuel was made by the three aforementioned US mfrs under license from MAN of Germany... it is not a US design and was just sort of a aid to Germany convert to one fuel for the Military blooper....

There will be a tag, on the passenger side of the engine block, near the front which will have most of the pertinent data. It will tell you what model of engine it is, the date the engine was built and the main/connecting rod bearing sizes if it was rebuilt.

So being a 0540 it is a late contract... 1970s....and is either a C or D originally.... and has had the steering gear replaced.. See DD's ID article

Push in the e-stop cable above and to the left of the 3 lever light switch and then rotate the accessory switch (goofy looking one right above the lights) clockwise and up... the starter button should be just out of view (in this photo) at the bottom edge of the dash to the right of the steering column (even with the lower left dash panel screw) - give it a little throttle as you crank and off it goes - let the thing warm up a few min before rolling off

Actually, I figure originally it was a N/A engine - the engine data plate says to set ther timing to 25 degrees, which is correct for a N/A engine; 20 degrees is correct for a turbo engine. Someone must have added the turbo later on in the trucks life.

chief76433 - Get us a picture of the turbo and we can tell you if it is a C or D turbo. The exhaust side of the C turbos are relatively narrow and taper from the bottom up kind of like a snail's shell, D turbos have a fatter exhaust side which is uniform in width.

Chief, before you start that thing, go to the TM section of the site and download TM 9-2320-361-10. Right click on the link and save it to your hard drive. You NEED to read that manual before you start fooling with that truck. You also need to be aware of a possible runaway and have a plan in place to prevent it. Need to do a little more homework before you get underway.

I read through TM 9-2320-361-10 as you suggested--the entire manual. I didn't see how to solve a runaway. I'm assuming a runaway is an engine that can't be shut off? Also, I didn't notice anything about the air tanks. Am I supposed to drain them daily or after a run? Thanks.

Just to clarify for me since I'm still learning, I thought the -1C in the engine model number designates that it has (or was originally equipped with) the C turbo?

Not quite..........an LDT-465-1C is a "C" model engine.......it can have either a "C" or a "D" turbo. There is no correlation between a 1C or 1D engine and a C or a D turbo.

I know, it's confusing.
