What is a HEMTT really worth?

There's a pretty big difference between the 3 variants of the HEMTT, and don't forget their layout.

The "forgotten" HEMTT is the FWC variant called the MK48 (aka Mk4.8). This is the USMC version with 4x4 front control, and a Mk19 rear with 4x4, equaling the 8x8 of the US Army version.

The cabs are different in soooo many ways. The big diff is the gap in the center-back for air flow to the radiator. One requires the driver to lean forward to talk to the passenger. One lacks a rear window.

I would not be surprised if there are a dozen versions of the famous HEMTT profile out there. Just think: wrecker, tanker, LHS, PLTS, cargo, MK48...how far can you go?

It's my opinion that HEMTTs "slip through the system" to be allowed for civilian purchase. There's no reason for their decommission.

BTW, there's a MK48 at Barstow Truck Parts...sans EUC.... get out your checkbook.

All HEMTTs are being rebuilt by Oshkosh as part of the HEMTT RECAP program. None are heading to DRMO. If they are to trashed to be rebuilt, they become parts donors.
Just about all wheeled vehicles used in Iraq are being rebuilt at a great savings to the taxpayer over the cost of a brand new one.

Yeah, I think the going rate is a little low, but that may just be me. The disc brakes is an unknown, because my A3 has drums. When did they get disks? As for the Cats, that was a *BIG* political decision back in the A2 days that became "Production" in the A3, and I have an awful feeling it's emissions-related. Just do the math of particulates-per-horsepower and you'll see my point.

The Cat's a *GREAT* engine, and so is the 8V92, but contracts are won and lost over some specific facet that Congressman A has in their back pocket. The ISX never had a chance

HEMTT brochure for the A3 lists disc brakes as the only brake offered and the un-named 470 hp diesel engine. Also of note is that the A3 uses the ProPulse® diesel-electric drive system as Oshkosh calls it.

This version turns into a 100Kw generator for clean field supplied electric.

The HEMTT A4 brochure lists the Cat 15.2 liter engine with horsepower rating of 500 horsepower. It looks for now that the A4 version is using a conventional drive system with a 5 speed Allison 4500SP transmission.

The A3 is a Hybrid version of the HEMTT that’s why it uses a smaller engine but with the ultra capacitors it is capable of short burst of extra power having ridden in it I can tell you it’s a kick in the pants. The engine is a Cummins ISL10 version extremely up rated that powers a generator the drive train is similar to a diesel train with electric motors on the axles.

For a M984A1 WW Uncle Sam pays $276,866.00 per

for a M984A2 it goes for $379,000.00

and a M984A2R1 goes for $199,160.00

a straight M984 is $155,000.00

As of right now there is a HUGE issue with the M984A4's.A big safetly use message went out about electrical fires..lol...At one point they were all deadlined

Looks like he might have bought the LVS wrecker prototype that was for sale in VA. Pretty nice truck. I always wondered how it differed from the production trucks...if at all.

It looks like the LVS that was for sale for $50K. Quite rusty and dirty but looks like it will clean up REAL nice with TLC. Congrats! nopics

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but... Any word of any Hemtt's changing hands lately? Just wondering if any are for sale and what has happened to the prices?

The one on ARMYJEEPS.NET has been sold...assuming it is the one that was for sale in KY. Figure you will spend $50K for a HEMTT that is in running condition. You will pay more if it is cherry, like STALWARTs truck or like my old M977 that is in my avatar. If you have $50-75K, and you are willing to spend it on a truck, you will own a HEMTT if you keep looking. They are out there, but they are very rare. I once counted about 12 in civilian hands. There are probably a few others, but I spoke to a few other guys who are surplus business savvy (dealers and longtime collectors) and they agreed with the estimate of 12. Oh yeah...one more thing...don't have your heart set on a particular model. If you want one, you will almost certainly have to take what is available...cargo, tractor, wrecker, or fueler. This is not like shopping for a deuce where you say, "I want a solid green one with a winch." ;)

Well, men, I am learning more about this stuff as I go. What I'm thinking is that I need to build a collection of a few higher quality pieces. Right now I have really nice trucks, but I just keep buying more nice stuff. I think I need to sell some of the smaller stuff and consolidate into one or two really nice trucks. Maybe a Hemtt and something else. I still like my M818. I just wish it had AC. Just my thoughts. What do you guys think?:beer:

quality trumps quanity every time. Whatever vehicle you chose to own its best to find the nicest one you can find/afford.

Funny how 6 years ago or our hemtts were worth that of a nice house or a good truck down payment, and now you see them leaving auction for 15k or under. Im glad i got on the cheap side of this fence!

Agreed.. It's funny how things change. I'm glad you brought this thread back up.. I had no idea people were paying that much for those things :shock:
