Actually it does. Teach a man to fish, he feeds himself forever; give him a fish, he eats once.

This from an old post. This is exactly why going over the same things over and over again is actually hurtful to the site and to the membership.

"But now, I find difficulty in using the search feature. Because of the duplication of topics. Instead of bumping an old thread to the top, people start a new thread. So now, when I do a search for head gasket, or axle seal, or towbar, I get a bazillion hits.

And since I get a bazillion hits, I either have to read 30 threads or................ START A NEW THREAD.

It seems most folks choose the latter and this only adds to the problem. It's like a snowball."

One day, we won't be able to find ANYTHING here.
The problem with this library is that the Librarian does not file the books in any particular pattern. The book titles are sometimes misleading and card catalog is based on searching the entire book for matching words Imagine if you did that in a "real library". You would find 1000's of books with that word in it! That would be a real time waster. Maybe CLINTO the Librarian would go through all the threads and NAME the thread by it's true content based on some kind of a "STANDARD" set so we can search by TITLE and find the answer we are looking for not just the words in the entire thread.

On Ebay (i know you guys like to make fun of it) you have the option to search the title or Title and description for specific items you are looking for. When you search for both you get some unrelated stuff sometimes. Title searches give better results in most cases.

The problem in the Forum is that people tend to label their threads to make them sound interesting but may be misleading in a search. If you want to FIX the search problem then fix the TITLES. SOMEONE will need to do WORK to fix it...not just tell us to go search. It's like FRODO said, Telling someone to go FISH is not the same as teaching him how to fish and giving him the PROPER fishing gear. The POND has too many kind of fish and i don't know what i need to catch a CARP.

I disagree with members about the question of "What is the price of a Deuce on GL?" The answer is: They average in the TEENS but can go for over $2000 depending on location, condition, and the position of the MOON. 5 ton truck (like M818 and cargo trucks average in the $3000 to $4000 price range with same variables.

As someone that watches GL and the Forum and the chat areas that is what i observed as an average price! SIMPLE ANSWER! See that was not difficult!

GE, you seem to have all of the answers. Why don't you volunteer to rename the old threads instead of heaping additional work and responsibility on CLINTO or another moderator?!?! You seem really helpful. You helped out the original poster. Now, help the site out.

Bruce I would love to, but some of your posts might get deleted by ACCIDENT! Why not volunteer yourself!

This type of work requires someone with better ENGLISH language skills then I have. An English Major would be able to convert the Titles into a more useful form. CLINTO seems to be Really good at the SEARCH thing so I voted for him. I think the job is bigger than one person anyway.

Maybe someone who is retired would be more suited for this job. Just a thought.

We had this same issue on another forum I am on. Search wasn't very effective and the same topics would get covered multiple times. They came to the solution of not archiving threads anymore. Once they are a year old they disappear forever. That keeps the search feature searching only a few threads and stopped everybody from yelling search all the time because their is nothing there to search. I would guess it saved them some bandwith and money as well.

It is great for people like me who often put their foot in their mouth because other people can't go back and search my old post and drag them up all the time:mrgreen:

Sounds about right!

The search works great for me, if you use the advanced search its 10x easier to find what your looking for! There should not be a problem other then threads clogged up with useless questions like how much should I bid for a deuce.

Here is an example of a Useless TITLE: "insane parts counter" The thread is about someone looking for a Cotter Pin for his CUCV and O'Reilies not being able to find it. Maybe it should have read: "Cotter Pin for CUCV needed " This is just an example of the TITLE being misleading.

Why, so everyone who put up a thread about putting tires on a deuce, all the threads will be "deuce tire swap" and I know there will be 100 threads "cucv glow plugs". That's what's going to happen if they changed all the names. When you do a search, it ddoesn't just search for titles, but for key words in the forum. But I do agree that the title has to be some what related to the post, just don't have to be so up tight about it because if you search for it, its going to come up no matter what.

I'm just blown away by this thread. Very very sad.

I'll donate my time to changing titles to help Clinto out if thats what everyone wants.

This thread needs to be taken out behind the shed and shot... :-(

How many times is someone going to start a new thread about "How Many Days Does it take for the EUC to Clear?" Couldn't we just have a running tally in one area. I didn't see BRUCE complain about that one:roll:fat lady sings

GE, he who screams the loudest is not always right. I see your reputation from your brothers in Lousiana precedes you and is accurate. I was unsure what they meant until now.

Take my comments as generic, as this is not meant to be specific to this dude's posts here.

I bet there will be peace in the Middle east, before people search efficiently!
You are likely right.

Frodo, a year or two ago, I tried giving "search lessons" in chat, on a weekly schedule.

Guess what, nobody wanted to discuss or learn how to search more efficiently!

They want a hot platter of fish(not lessons how to fish).
Still likely right, but making assumptions or generalizations that apply to everyone is not very nice.

It's better to give people the benefit of the doubt, show them a little wisdom, and then if they ignore it, well, deal with it however you want.

You don't teach someone by starting out rude or stand offish, you gotta wait to see how they like learning before you show 'em the ruler.

Ge, your correct about using descriptive titles. I have asked over and over, for the users to consider the title they choose and how it will be used in a search.(Almost as much as I have suggested using the search function) It seemed that nobody wanted to listen to that either.

Please keep it polite without personal comments. (or you'll receive a 7 day vacation from SS)
