What Type of Chain Fall to Use for Spare?

I have an M925 and the manual says to use a chain fall to lower and raise spare tire. I was wondering what other 5 ton owners were using. I see that Harbor Freight has a small one for $40.

The original isn't anything special, just need to make sure it has enough lifting capacity (I would think 500lbs to be sufficient) and it has enough travel and clearance to raise the tire up, then lower it all the way to the ground, and by that I mean flat to the ground; big a boy as I am, I have had wheels on the ground that I just couldn't pick back up, at least without important anatomy parts dragging the ground. Tomorrow I'll dig one out that's still in the box.

I own a M925 just like you and i went with the Harbor Freight 1 ton model. Now Harbor Freight makes a few different models of the 1 ton chain fall. Most of them only have 10 feet of chain on them but they have 1 model that has 15 feet of chain. That's the one i went with, in my case i had to order it on line because my local story didn't stock the one with 15 feet of chain. Just to let you know the 15 feet of chain is a little too long, i think if you could find one with about 12 feet of chain that would be just about right. That extra chain on mine is not all bad, case in point, if my tire falls over i will have the extra length to rap chain around the tire and pick it up. Oh if you check the parts for sale section on S.S. there was another member who had a factory chain fall for sale for 150 about a week ago.

I found a 2 ton model on epay for the same $ as the harbor freight with free shipping. I thought the 500lb oe was a little on the low side. I personally prefer to be overrated and never need it than cutting it too close.

The military chain fall that is issued for the M939 trucks is rated for 1/4 ton (500lbs). I've got a brand new one that came with a M931 I picked up and it's clearly marked "1/4 ton". I don't recall the manufacturer. If 500lbs is good enough for the military it should be good enough for us.

There is some debate if the Chinese HF chain fall will actually lift 500lbs safely though.

I had a 2 ton laying around. Just used a short length of chain to rig the tire cause the chain on the block wasn't quite long enough when rigged to the spare alone.

I bought an NOS one on ePay for about $50. It is definitely worth it - heavy duty, nice unit. The part number is in the TM. I mocked up a tire change and it works well. Don't forget the accompanying chain to hook the tire to the chain fall.
