What Would Motor Pool Do?

I have a question for the current and former Army Motor Pool personnel among us, really more of a request for an opinion. I bought a nice M416 the other day and it needs a little work (conversion back from civvie lights and new tires) and I am torn with the decision as to what direction I am going to go. The trailer will be used exclusively with my M1009, for everything I can find to do with it (including parades, hauling stuff, shows, anything really) so I will be fixing any mechanical issues I find. I am wondering what Motor Pool would do (WWMPD) if, hypothetically speaking of course, someone found a M416 on base and brought it to them to be made ready for daily use with a M1009. I assume they would install whatever new tail lights they have in the warehouse (I want to install HMMWV LEDs), new wiring (on the way) but what would they do for tires? I know the "correct" tires are 700x16 NDT but would they even have any of them around? Would they have ANY tires around for another application that would be that size? Would they just go to WallyWorld and buy some tires? The restorer in me wants the NDTs but I don't want to deal with tubes. I want it to be all military but the trailer will also need to be safe and practical for daily use, not that the GVW will stress any tires I choose.

Of course, the easy answer would be the Michelin XLs that the Canadians used on their M416 variant (M101 in their books), anyone know where to find some of THEM???

Seriously, though, NEIOWA is right on. They'd turn it in as outdated excess material and probably ask themselves how something that old snuck through the cracks. I think you are asking more about what people in general would do with such a find. Well, here's what I would do it. Sell it and buy a trailer that is original. They are not that expensive. By the way, there is nothing inherently unsafe about NDCCs (technically speaking they ARE NOT NDTs), especially on a trailer. Sure, radials are better, but I would never worry about the NDCCs on a trailer as long as they were reasonable trailers. Speaking of what the military would do, they would put their worst NDCCs off of a another truck on their trailers. They did this all the time. I am not saying that they would not consider mounting new tires, but I have seen many, many trailers come out with cupped or worn or dry tires. Now, that could have been a situation where they stole the good tires off, but I have also seen lug nuts that had not been touched so the worn tires were on there for a while. Good luck.

If this thing had shown up in my motor pool I'd have given it to anyone that wanted it and gotten it out of there before some maniac tried to put it on the property book as "Found on post"

But for fixing it, LED light can be a good option for small trailers because the can (generally) handle either 12 or 24 volts. For tires I'd try to find some rims that don't need tubes and go with commercial tires. After all, that's what your M1009 has.

EDIT: BTW, the 7:00-16s are likely still in the system somewhere because some of the smallest shelter dollys have them.

M416's are long out of the system, so I'd be all for turning it into DRMO to clear it off the Property Book.
However, for fixing it, this is what I do for all my "new to me" trailers:

check/service bearings
check/redo the lights/wiring/reflectors
sandblast/paint job if needed
replace shocks
new tires

As for what tires, the correct ones are the NDCC's but if you dont want to deal with tubes, those are out, and I dont know what to tell you.

The Trucklight Omnivolt lights are awesome, I have a pair on my M1101 and my CDN M101, so I never have to worry about what truck is pulling it (HMMWV, civilian pickup, or whatever) as far as voltages. As far as wiring connections, I kept is all stock military wiring with the mil connector, and made up a Mil trailer to civilian 7 wire adapter and keep one with the trailers at all times, so no need to worry about that.

Here at MCAS Cherry Point, we still have about 20 to 30 WWII navy mark II bomb trailers in use every day, and two M416 trailers I still see being used by the Marines here. If you ever get a chance to see the "pie chart" that shows the different military services budgets, you will see why we try to keep stuff that works.
To bad you are in Texas, I have a 1st gulf war captured Irac trailer that would look great behind your truck.

Yes, the tires on it right now are badly cupped, I suspect they are the worn fronts from a M151.

I've never dealt with them. I'd check to make sure the hole patterns would line up first to the M416 hubs. I dont know if CDN tires will fit the M416 rims.

Also, be aware there are no "new" ILTIS tires out there. They are all 12-14 years old. The original tires on my CDN M101 are still on there with no weather cracking or other problems at all, looking brand new tread wise, but it is something to be aware of.

Thanks for those links, I found a very useful bit of information from the classified ad, the M101CDN bolt circle is 5x112mm and according to the -14 the M416 is 5.5x140mm so the wheels will NOT interchange. Also thanks for the heads up on the age of those tires, I wondered about that, now I know.

I guess the next thing I need to know is if radial tires can safely be mounted on M151/M416 wheels.

Sounds like your all set. Let me know if you need pics of the MIL to civy adapter for the wiring end of things. I like to keep all my stuff as stock as possible, or easily changed back to stock if I modify it.

I WOULD like to see that, Reloader64 built me a CUCV to 4 pin civvie adapter, but I would like to have a connector to adapt a mil trailer to civvie vehicles. I just bought a used set of TruckLite omnivolt LED tail lights to convert the trailer back to MILSPEC config, all I need now to complete the wiring is a new inter vehicular cable.

Coker has reproduction tires if that's what you're asking for.

I knew about the repop NDCCs out there, I was wondering if there was a replacement tire for the application in CURRENT military stores, I found that the Army does still use 700x16 NDCCs for some applications so the Cokers are what I will be buying! In fact, the tires are the only piece to the puzzle I still lack. I have nice used LED tail lights, a NOS wiring harness, a NOS intervehicular cable and NOS shock absorbers all on the way.
