What's that? Right from the ECM

Hallo,
sorry to ask you. But knows anybody, what this is? It is right from the ECM and it isn't connected to anything. I mean this thing with the serial number MFR-.....???

I think that is the interference filter and it is bypassed because it causes problems.

Thank you. Interference filter for what? To protect the ECM? My ECM is dead, because of an internal shortcut from the batteries.
I know interference filter with AC current, but not with DC current.
Does anybody has the serial number? Then I would try to find a technical data sheet.

Sorry, that is not correct. My ECM is in a repair shop an the internal power supply is damaged, not the battery. And this happened as one of my 12V batteries had an internal shortcut.

I would think an internal short in the battery would just cause the battery to drain and go to zero volts. How did it mess up the ECU?

jumping truck with a short in battery is maybe what the guy was referring too the burn up of the power supply??? or the fellow is blowing smoke up gemini25 arse..... like a mechanic selling a blond a new transmission saying " if she had not let it get low on anti seize fluid she would not have broke it"

While jump starting does have the potential to send a voltage spike down the system, I don't think internally shorted batteries would cause this type of damage. Then again strange things can happen.

If the ECU can't handle a voltage spike the engineer who designed it was a HACK. There are many thasounds of ECUs out there that get Jump started all of the time. You just don't see them dead after a jump..

They can repair an internal power supply but they cannot change the battery on an ECM?
yes, the designers were hacks... they used a volatile memory that would kill the ECU when the memory battery died(Lot of money in proprietary parts)... Supposedly cat changed this design...

I think this is the battery for the ECU... But not sure. I don't have an ECU in my leaky truck but if I did I would find a way to replace the battery. There should be a way to replace without losing memory.

So, I send my ECM to a repair shop and they can repair it. They said the internal power supply is damaged.
Looks like I got a voltage spike from somewhere.

And now I come back to my first question. Can it be, that this piece right from the ECM it there to protect the ECM?

I believe you are correct - the filter was meant to protect the ECM from electromagnetic interference/pulses. Was your repair successful? Were they able to replace the battery while they repaired it? Who repaired it? I believe I may have an M1078A1 with an ECM with a similar damaged power supply.

When I turn on the ignition switch the check engine light blinks for a split second as the voltage meter blips down from 24V. As the check engine light goes off, the voltage meter blips back up to 24v. I plan to disconnect the P2 (front) connector on the ECM to see if there is possibly a short on the engine side in a sensor maybe? I'm hoping to be able to keep the ECM powered on for long enough to establish a connection with a code reader. So far I haven't been able to get a connection.

If I can't get any connection after removing the P2 connector, I am considering using an aftermarket ECM repair service in Fort Worth, TX.

this never got answered...... to spark (pardon the pun) could one sodder; in parallel, a second battery holder with a switch and maybe something to buffer any spikes then plop a good batt. in it?? . Followed by removing old batt..... and replace with new batt. then flick the switch off... ?

granted that sounds so simple on face of it. likely not that simple......
