Whats your thoughts on spin on primary and secondary fuel filters?

Like the title says what are your thoughts on a spin on primary and secondary fuel filter adaptors? I have searched the forum and find where some people are using the primary but don't see much mention of people using the secondary filter adaptors. I am a new deuce owner and will be switching to the spin on oil filters but am undecided on the fuel filters. Should I change one or both fuel filters to spin on or leave them as canister filters? I will be running only diesel fuel in the truck. Thanks for the help.

If you put 10K miles a year on a deuce, you might eventually pay off a spin on oil filter.
But it will take years and years.
Spin on fuel filter? Dunno.
Hey, if you have the money to burn, go for it!

In my opinion spin on oil filters are a must but what are the benefits of spin on fuel filters?

If your existing filters are complete, you can get the elements from several of the venders. You can also get the elements from a truck supply house but they do not always include the gasket. The only advantage of the spin on that I can see is they are easier to change but is it worth the cost?

When JT came out with the spin on oil filters I bought them and loved the ease of change and the instant oil pressure. Seemed like a really good idea.

He later came out with the spin on primary and secondary fuel filters. After my experience with the spin on oil filters I figured it might be worth it for the spin on fuel filters.

Glad I did. When I began changing the original filters and can it became apparent that they were very rusty. Lots of rust on the cans. I figure I could grind it out and it would just rust again. With the spin on fuel filters I just take them off and toss them. No more rust worries.

In sum, I think all the spin on filters are a really good idea.

Here's my thoughts. If you have the funds I would at least get the primary adapter. For me it is the most changed filter because it is the first one the fuel goes through. It is worth it in my opinion just for the ease of changing it in a minute with no tools other than maybe a strap wrench which can be real handy on the side of the road. I don't change my secondary/final filters very often because I run straight clean diesel and they seem to stay pretty clean.

The primary is a pain to get to and service. A spin on might be nice to have there. The secondarys are easy to get to and cheap. Thats my $.02

I also plan on only running diesel fuel through it. Are any online vendors better than the next for buying the fuel filters? I'm thinking I will change the primary to a spin on and leave the secondary as stock.

I run all spin on filters. Why? Cause I'm lazy and I can find all 3 different filters at my local auto parts store. No ordering and waiting and no fumbling with those canisters. O and that primary filter is a real P.I.T.A . Installing the primary adapter is a pain but once its there its easy as can be to change the filter.

Be aware the full spin on set up will cost a few hundred. Man it makes maintenance so easy. Also, John (jatonka) is a great guy to deal with.

Like was mentioned in an earlier post, I have spin on oil filters because its quick and easy to change oil and I have a spin on Primary fuel filter because is AGAIN very easy to change and its the first one to accumulate ice and dirt, secondary fuel filters are good for a very long time!

I put the spin on oil filters which was one of the best things I have done,, instant oil pressure, cleaner to change and don't have oil leaks any more. for fuel, I put the Spin on primary which again was well worth it, plus my canister was badly rusted and missing all the internal parts and the filter was just floating in there. For the secondary I went with the single spin on kit in this video, a lot cheaper and after watching the video, the final filter really isn't doing anything anyway....

As said previously, the instant oil pressure is a good reason to purchase the after market spin-on filters. That fact alone was a major deal maker for me. Convenience was the next plus. I have not as of yet, replaced the primary or secondary fuel filters with the spin-ons. The primary seems to be a good idea to replace because of it's access difficulty, however the secondaries I'd replace just for the cool factor. Just my 2cents.

You can put a 6micron filter in the second-secondary can if you like.

I have JT's spin on oil filters and eventually installed Westfolk's primary and secondary fuel filter setup. Why? The primary spin on is so much easier to get to and service/change. Every time you toss the spin on filters, you also get a new o ring/gasket, reducing the leak issue. The double secondary stock filter setup appears to be less effective that one good contemporary spin on filter.

Unless run often and/or run hard, the change in setup might not make much difference. I am thinking that the old engine and old, intricate IP and hydraulic head can use every little bit of help I can give them. If they don't break because of fuel contamination getting through, then I don't have to fix them, and that is how I justify the investment.

Short answer:

Spin on oil filters: Faster to change, almost instant oil pressure (which is probably of limited benefit, since all these trucks already have 95% of their dry starts under their belts by the time we get them).
Spin on primary filter: Lot easier and faster to change. I can't remember if the spin on's are a different micron rating.
Spin on secondaries: Lot easier to change due to the canister gaskets, especially if you have a factory heater.

No real cons other than cost and non-originality, although removing them for a "factory correct" restoration is quick and easy.
