Wheel Adapters ?

Our volunteer fire department got a M931A2 tractor truck with the 14.00R20 tires on it. Makes it stand taller than the old M809 series we are replacing that the trailer sat level on. What I'm wondering is can we find spacers or adapters to put those bigger single tires on our trailer to raise it up some. Trailer has 9.00-20 duals on it now. Thanks.

You could use the same adapters folks use to upgrade deuces to 11x20 tires. The other issue you need to check is interference with the trailer landing gear feet hitting the tractor rear tires during turns. You may need to strap the feet so they are vertical on the back side of the landing gear legs.

You do not any adapters to put on 11.00x20's on the 9.00x20 wheel. If you have 6 bolt Deuce type wheels the 11.00x20's should go right on, if you have clearances on the trailer.

Why not just put shorter tires on the tractor? You will lose some top speed, butt gain some torque. If your pulling a bunch of water that would be a plus.

If they had to change rims they would lose the CTIS (assuming it works and they want to keep it). Plus all the hassle of closing off the CTIS system.

Since the trailer is the topic of the thread, why not give us some details on the trailer. Hard to figure what you need when the only thing on earth we know about it is the tire size. It would be.much more helpful to post a pic of the trailer.

You're right, I was thinking of singling out deuces with adaptors and larger tires. 11.00x20 tires should go on the 9.00x20-size rims on the trailer.

The trailer may still have a good slope with 1100 tires. I just looked at one of my old trailers with 9.00 tires, and the feet swivel side to side, not front-to-back, so you'd actually have to take the feet off to keep from hitting the 14.00 tires on a M931A2. Not really a problem if you don't plan to unhitch the trailer very often.

You are right about the slope. I know it may not be apples and apples, but here is my M931a1 with a M970 fuel trailer with 11.00x20's on it and it does have some slope.

I did more looking today and trailer we have now does have 9.00-20, 6 hole wheels. We need to just trade axles out for some with better air brakes so can use 10 hole wheels and taller tires to raise it up enough. It's on a 1969 XM818 5 ton now but the M931A2 fifth wheel is only about 5 inches taller. I thought it was more difference than that. This trailer has the floating axles like the trucks do is why we got it as just a chassis and used twin air tanks given to us and it will just go places with more water that other trucks can't on rough terrain fires. It carries 2000 gallons which is what we need on grass fires that are usually long distances away from water sources in our area. Smaller trucks aren't for us they just spend too much time refilling instead of fighting fire. Trade axles and then go with 11.00-20 or 12.00-20 or 14.00-20 to raise it up. We can always hook it on one of our extra 969A1 tankers too.

Not 100% but I want to put the bigger tires and 10 bolt wheels on a couple of my trailers. I am looking at changing the hubs, not sure but hopefully the spindle will be the same size so I can keep the axles.

Our old trailer has smaller axle tubes and air over hydraulic brakes that have always been a pain to keep up instead of full air brakes. I'm sure spindles are smaller than those on our 969A1 trailers but there might be a older 10 hole hub that fits yours out there.
