The number of bolts that hold the wheel halves together.

It's mainly the amount of pressure you can put in the tire.

8 bolt < 12 bolt without centering hole < 12 bolt with centering hole < 24 bolt with even spaced studs < 24 bolt uneven spaced studs.

The o-ring that seals the halves together is also different for the 8 bolt and early 12 bolt wheels, the later 12 bolt and the 24 bolt wheels use the same oring.

The 8 bolts are for bias ply tires and the later ones are for radials. The 8 bolts had magnesium runflats and the later ones are rubber. These are my observations; do not have a TM reference handy. The 8 bolt bias plys are not very popular and I was happy to switch to 12 bolt radials. My HMMWV drives, handles, tracks a lot better with radials.
