I am still waiting on my Historical Plates to arrive but I figure I will drill some holes in the rear mud flap brack and on 1 side of the front bumper to mount them. I paid $10 for the tags, $ 5 to a title swap and $5 postage for my plates. $20 for a life time of use of the plates seems like a good deal to me. Yet another reason I love living in South Dakota.

I am originally from PA, North Hills Area of Pittsburgh and now live in Ohio.

In Ohio, for Historical Military Vehicles you do not have to display the tags. Just stencil the number on the front and rear of the vehicle.

In PA you must display the Antique plate as you would a regular plate. On these trucks they are to be displayed on the left rear. If the truck was not originally equipped with a plate light it will not be required. The only time modifications need to be made is when the truck is used for commercial purposes then PADOT reg's will apply. Also when a vehicle inspection is done in PA all of the safety equipment that is installed must work properly, Lights, brakes, parking brake, wipers, good tires, no exhaust leaks, no open holes in the cab to the outside except the windows and side vents, etc.

:ditto:

It really depends on your state. I know TN cops don't seem to care where you mount it as long as you mount it somewhere outside.

I re-drilled my plate and mounted it in existing holes in my mud flap (the metal part). I had to cut a couple of spacers out of pipe so it would clear the ribs in the metal. No light but the cops don't seem to care about a light.
I did the same thing.

MD law state front and rear visible and illuminated on rear. Also the year and month stickers must be place in the correct spots.

I did have a cop stop me for a tail light being out and asked where my plate was, I handed it to him and all he said was "well you should put it in the back window to be seen".... I put it up there and asked if it could be seen! to that he just told me "you have a point. up there is fine." this was after I asked him to show me where there was a plate mount on my truck!

Again: this is of course HIS OPINION!!! IF you want the LAW go ask the BMV they can give you the LAW the cops sometimes as proven; and I have won many battles in court, only KNOW what they THINK is the law. No harm intended if any of you are police officers (I do have a few as friends, including state boys and the good ones told me to always ask BMV for the law)

I got a ticket in Florida with a jacked up Z71 I use to have because the officer said the plate had to be between x and y inches from the road. I told him I have seen low-riders with the ass dragging the ground and nobody cares. Then he walks to the front pulls out his tape measure and writes me another ticket for the headlights not being between x and y inches from the ground. He hands me the ticket smiles and says “Any more questions sir”. Wow was I hot. I just wanted to throw it down in drive and monster jump his squad car.

On the rear of my M35a2's I bought a 24 Volt Licence Plate Light from Erik's Military Surplus and a metal Licence Plate Holder i think it was Trucklite. put masking tape over the support that the left mud flap mounts to. i moved it until i found the best place and marked it. drilled a hole for light wire and 2 mounting bolts. then i found the wire that runs the tail lights when you turn on the service lights and put a y addapter. and there we are.

i did the same thing on my M109a3, however i drilled through the back plate of the box since there is no tailgate to worry about.

The best way to get the CORRECT answer is google your state traffic codes. The legal code will go line by line and tell you what is required (where to mount or not mount the plate(s), if you are required to have a light, etc.). If they (the state) requires anything, it MUST be in their code. Be sure to watch for notes about exceptions for collector vehicles or in particular collector military vehicles (which may have additional exceptions or requirements than a normal collector vehicle).

I know if MN if you are registered as a collector military vehicle and have "historically correct" bumper number markings that are registered, you are not required to mount the license plate (glove box it). However, if you don't meet that requirement, you have to mount the plate(s). 2cents

thanks, Texas requires a licence plate light and none of my trucks are registered as FMV or collector vehicles. i started to do that but i am the type that sometimes i just jump in a truck a drive. i did not want to worry about the getting a ticket for joy riding in my own truck.

MN requires the light, so it will be one of my first projects when I get home. Sounds like you had good luck with the one from Erik's? Let me know how well it holds up. I looked at ordering the same light, but had wondered about the best wiring set-up. The "Y" seems to be a good way to go.

i have had the one on my M109a3 for several tears with no problem. the wiring parts you will need are 1 y connection, 1 headlight connector or wire with the same ends (to plug into y and plug into the taillight plug) and 1 wire to go from y connection to the licence plate light plug. i will try to get a better picture of the parts and connection this weekend.
