Where to find a M923?

First time poster and diesel n00b. For some reason I've been reading and drooling over these trucks! But I've seen a few auctions of various quality, where is the best source to find these? I've looked at Iron Planet but there is slim pickings and the ones that remain are in pretty rough shape. what other sources are there?

Also I've read that some USMC M923A1's have locking rear diffs? Is this true? And is it always locked or is it something that can be engaged / disengaged? Or are there any other models that are better options?

The lockers are Detroit lockers, always on.

Some marine trucks, but not all marine trucks have them.

Marine trucks tend to be really really rough. If the locker is a must-have, you may consider pulling it out of a marine truck and putting it into a more pristine example...

Other options - an m931/M932 truck tractor variant with a cut down cargo bed. The shorter wheelbase adds a lot of maneuverability, similar to a bobbed truck, except you get to keep the 6x6 functionality.

Keep an eye on the classifieds section on this site.
Ebay always has several, but those tend to be higher $$$

Govplanet.com will have rough ones then cycle through and have some really nice ones that had rebuilds done.
A mixture of both usually
Just keep watching.

How will you use the truck? Maneuverability in the city takes a short wheel base. How much money are you budgeting? The days of rather cheap ones seem to be gone, but you might get lucky. I've bought 10 and sold 8 over about 3 years

When one buys on just internet info, there is a lot that can be missed. For example, I have a 91 M931 that would not start, has a tank obstruction problem that I have not got to yet. Instead of airing up the brakes or caging them, the army just dragged it and put flat spots on the rear tires. They didn't mention four flat spots on tires and the pictures, conveniently, did not show it. Surprise !

If you find one that someone knows what is wrong and right about the truck and is willing to sell at a reasonable price, I think you will do better than gambling at the auction....unless you have lots of money and can buy a premium truck.

My M931A2 is listed in the classified, should you decide to spend on the lower end.

Pay a higher price for a fresh rebuild truck and not have a lot, if any issues with it.

Pay a much lower price and have to chase problems and replace parts and not have any fun.


All all depends on wallet

It depends on where it was "rebuilt" . Red River rebuilds were pretty much just paint jobs and MWO's unless there was a major failure before it went there.

My RR rebuild had some intentional sabotage, I believe (cut wires), so don't think all is well because you pay a high price for a rebuilt truck. I'm still replacing the small stuff taken, for example the breather on the power steering reservoir and spare tire.

Both mine were freshly done and they did a great job.
They weren't cheap

But I have heard the stories about some of the RR builds.

No issues and have driven my 925 over 3500 miles since I got it from GL.
The 923 has almost that much.

Other than some batteries in the 925 that wouldn't come
back to life they have both been great.
A complete set of new Hawkers solved that.


I would rather spend extra up front for piece of mind instead of chasing one issue after another.

wow thats awesome man thanks for the offer! Right now I honestly don't know where I'd park the truck but for some reason I just want one just like all the other toys I have haha! And yes the old saying is true, you get what you pay for.

And not having the tools or ability to work on such a big truck myself is also a limiting factor. I think once I move to another house that has more land then I'll be seriously looking to get one. I'm not looking to spend a huge amount of money since I've seen some that sell for almost $40k with the BOV camper stuff in it which is cool but I think 5-15k would probably be the best option so that it's not a complete POS but it's something to work with. And I've always wanted a cummins truck and I don't really know why haha

anyway thanks everyone for being so helpful! most car or truck sites aren't usually this welcoming. :)

Also would want to get one with a working winch and be able to tow things like boats, or my other trucks and cars around as I'm sure this wouldn't be much of a challenge for this thing.... Although it would be really sweet to have a rear view camera but now I'm just being spoiled lol

They tow just fine. This trailer weighs about 11,000 pounds and the truck hardly notices it. I should handle your boats or other vehicles without issue. Welcome to the hobby and keep in mind, these trucks are herd vehicles. I do not know many members here with just one.
