Sounds like the count is now 12, how many lots in total was on the table, we HAVE to be getting close to that total number, this may be the first time boots was put on the ground to handle a total event, if this works it may be a start of a NEW SS OPERATION.

WM, last time I loaded out at Blount Island, Honeywell insisted on doing the loading. They also have several ramp/docks around the facility.

I won a complete unit-power unit and trailer. Perhaps those that paid more for power units did not notice that is was for a single item. The singles where mixed in with complete units. Next up is planning to get it to Minnesota.

Perhaps the actual governor on these trucks will be the driver. Given they are articulated, 57 MPH may be actual white knuckle territory. Maybe thats not so fast when there are no obstacles around you, but driving in traffic with a Honda to the right and a Fiat to the left....

Correct, after speaking with several drivers of these, there are certain conditions that these vehicles can be EXTREEMLY dangerous. Under certain conditions they have a tendency head off the road all on their own.

After those discussions I removed them from my "wish list." That is until I get a lot of property, in a few years, then they will be back. Until then I'll stick to the straight trucks, even the USMC doesn't want articulated any more. I read somewhere that the articulating joint was more than $50,000 from Oshkosh.

Really don't think the steering will be as quick as you think, the front unit is not like a scraper (627, 637, 657, ect.) front unit, may steer better than the straight 8x8 as is in making tighter turns, but as far as waggling the front around because it is articulated I don't see it, there is a lot of weight on those front tires that is quite far away from the articulation joint.

The exception to my above thought would be VERY wet roads where the tires might loose some grip.

Another thing to consider on these trucks is the 2 stroke, high compression, V-8 Detriot diesel that powers them.

If you have the Jake brakes on while driving in icy conditions and let up off the throttle the engine compression can cause the wheels to lock up. This was true on commercial trucks with the double breasted Yamahas in them as well.

One of my soldiers in Korea was driving an empty fuel HEMMT back from a remote refuel on a fresh layer of snow.......fortunatly there was no traffic on the 4 lane he was on. I had told him not to use the Jakes but he knew more than the old Sergeant.

I was following him in a CUCV and when he got close to the off ramp he backed off the throttle and all four axles locked up.......he did two 360's and ended up facing the wrong way on the ramp. The fact that he hit nothing was more dumb luck than skill.

If you replaced the big two stroke Detriot with a 60 series you would have a great vehicle.

Remember these weigh over 45,000 lbs..For the combo..I can haul up to 46,000 lbs without permits. Let me know if you need one hauled..I bought one. Goin to play with it and haul my Hmmwv around...WISH they held more people./...I will let you know if they weigh 48,000lbs like they say...I dont beleive it. I can save you alot of $$ by not needing permits in each state. I have a alumium spread axel step deck with ramps and a winch..

OK guys I just got off the phone with Louis the J'vill GL guy.

I have his email so I can keep him updated on our little project.

He said he would be willing to work with us to do a mass recovery. This will actually help them in that this is not a GL site but a Marine Detachment located on the opposite side of J'ville from GL.

It will save them a lot of commuting back and forth to the site.

The site is restricted access but ID card holders (I am retired Army) can get a temporary pass and get on unescorted.

Trucks can be towed off post by a commercial wrecker but the gate guards have to be informed as to which company will be used and when they are expected. If I am on the ground there and a wrecker is necessary I can work that issue.

I will also be carrying my slave cables and other items needed to make quick repairs if needed.

One of the vehicles sold had a flat tire on one of the front left axles......if this is one of the winners trucks I need to know about it.

Problems I forsee and can plan for:

Truckers not showing up when booked. If you are arranging transportation make sure your guy understands that they are dealing with a military installation and access is restricted. We also are working around GL's schedule.

Mechanical issues: Detriots that have been run out of fuel can be a pain to restart....it is usually necessary to pressurize the system to get them to start. They do not like ether. Hopefully all of these trucks have enough fuel to load or get to a fuel stop.

Lack of air due to no start. I have air lines that can be used to pressurize the system and the truck can be pulled/pushed up onto a trailer by another HEMMT. In extreme cases the air brakes can be caged to move the vehicle but that leaves it with NO BRAKES at all.

Funding. I can float small expenses on my credit card and get reimbursed later. If your vehicle needs a wrecker, tire service or anything else that cost real money you will have to take care of it with the vendor. I'll make sure your interest is protected and call you immediatly if there is an issue. We can discuss my compensation on a one on one basis as things come together.

If I missed anything let me know.
Is it possible to let GL know and The Military that we civilians are coordinating and maybe get and extended loadout time of say 15-20 days.?

I called the Jacksonville DRMO guys to ask about the units that were disconnected before bidding on mine - the gentleman that I spoke to (I think the same guy you talked to WM) said that they were going to work with "the Marine unit" to get them all hooked up before customers took delivery.

All of the units in this auction were Mk48/14 combinations (or solo FPU's).

My unit was lot 6520 / Event 11046 - no flat tires, Mk48 disconnected in pics, but connected in the video.

Augdog, congrats on 6521, that was one of the nicer ones! :-D
Thats cool if the guys that know how to work on these would be good enough to assemble them and do a good conscientious quality job of assembling the units. These guys that help out have some beverages coming on me if they make it to WI. If it makes a differnece, at least most of these are staying in United States of America citizens and not all going across the ponds to ungratefuls that would not appreciate them.

I'm not sure GL has too much pull once the paperwork hits DLA......I think it's the luck of the draw as to who's desk it lands on and how swift they are at doing the required background checks.

Unless you are a first time buyer the process has been taking a week or two (the one on my M927 took less).

As long as we keep Louis in the loop we should be able to make this work. I figure the first or second week of August unless somebody is in a big hurry.

The vehicles are secured on an active duty installation so I don't see a lot of danger in things getting damaged or going missing.

I'm going to email Louis and see if I can get a point of contact at the unit and see how much professionally courtesy they will extend to an old retired Master Sgt.
I am hoping to purchase an cherry MK48 and a flat-bed rear unit the next go around. Please keep this impromtu organization intact to facilitate the next bunch to hopefully come to auction

Dave, Pete and I have spoken and we're all working on shipping quotes to see what the best deal we can get is.
Tentatively, we may have them hauled to St Louis (relatively central to all the parties involved) where I can unload them and store them as needed :-D . We're also getting bids to have them delivered individually, as well.
Richard and Ron, so far it seems that we will gladly take use of your services and compensate accordingly.
Richard, any on the spot funding needs will be handled as they come (as long as we can give them a CC # over the phone).

A central regional off load makes sense to get the units off base and reload to take them to final destinations.

Talked to my broker today, and told him the prices were over what we expected...

After talking directly to him found out the problem... he quoted all removable gooseneck trailers (the kind i need for my tanks) all there on the same day. He may rebid, but we should continue onward!

I don't know, I always liked high compression two strokes like CR 500 honda dirt bikes and the big Kawasaki's as well, big enough that at idle they still had some torque to not bog and just a bit of loading up while still going and then point in the right direction oopen the throttle, they clean out, hit the power band and hang on!! Good Times:eek::shock::mrgreen:
