WHO' S A FULL TIME LMTV OVERLANDER, ANY OUT THERE?

I've seen many people who have sold it all and moved into their Sprinter Van, or Mitsubishi Fuso RV, or F650 Camper (and many others) and do nothing but work from their rig remotely and travel the continent from the Lower 48 to Alaska etc...... What I have not seen is many people doing this from an LMTV platform. Are there any out there or are you one of them? I am planning on doing this down the road when I acquire my LMTV...
If there are any good reads, or video logs on anyone doing that post it here...

This is an interesting thread, thank you for posting it. I would also love to see even part time travelers respond to it. When I saw there were 27 posts I was excited. Turns out it is mostly posts about why they are not on this thread...

I'm one of those "on my way" guys yet I have full-timed before in an RV. Constatntly moving avery few weeks can get old, not to mention the planning that goes into moving all the time. And life happens. Our last trip was planned for a year, then my wife broke her elbow, requiring surgery about 4 months into the trip. She had no interest in trying to RV full time with 2 dogs and not being able to use her arm for 6 months.

Maybe this time will be different :)

There was a couple that posted here saying they live out of their LMTV and travel around. They had a classic picture on their blog of the truck in front of a huge sign labeled Nowhere in a place called Nowhere in CA out in the desert. A great pic for those who appreciate being out in the country.

They had problems with the truck. The oil line broke off from vibration, dumped oil and the engine blew. They were reflecting on the costs and thought if they were to do it over again it would have been better to pay someone go through the LMTV top-to-bottom.

This is exactly what I am saying. You can do it yourself (and save thousands) , BUT you must spend hundreds of hours scanning every tid bit of information in maintenance, let alone doing the work and paying for the tools and parts. This why I outlined the failure points of the 3116.

Cost, Quality, or Time... you can only pick two. That leaves only 3 courses of action...
  1. You can hurry out onto the road, and not pay to have the truck looked at. Fast, cheap, but low quality.
  2. You can hurry out onto the road, and pay (a lot) to have the truck professionally rebuilt/repaired. Fast, very expensive, high quality.
  3. You can take your time and do a lot of the work yourself. Very slow, considerable savings, high quality.

Out of the people full time overlanding I follow on Instagram currently. wazilife and m1087fmtv are the full time overlanders.

Wazilife is a young couple.
That sold everything and built their rig. Quite an interesting couple.

m1087fmtv (Bantha)an older couple that they also built out their rig and are remote working while overlanding. I believe it’s the only m1087 in civilian hands. But I could be wrong. They most if not all the work on it themselves.

I don’t understand why people are down on people selling merch. No one forcing you to buy it.
Unless you getting spammed by them or something. If that keeps them overlanding and out of the rat race more power to them. Sorry if it sounds like I’m ranting.

Tybrooke the deiselwolfpack is the one in the outside magazine article mentioned above. Truck was taken out over the summer but is not currently traveling.

Sean filter has a nice rig he built not a full time overlander but goes out on extended camping trips. Does have a lot of good info on his u tube channel.

Broke overland is a work in progress don’t believe he is full timing it as yet or know if they will.

The other one I know that overlands doesn’t do it in an fmtv.

There was a fella on Expedition Portal (Joaquin Suave, I think)gave sage advice to those who have this dream: Build, in your backyard, a plywood box the same size as your planned habitat. Live out of it for two weeks then review the soundness of your plan.
While not bad advice itself, it seems like that's the least of the problems considering almost nobody makes it past the bigger obstacle of years of building up the truck and $100k investment.

Not that it matters, but this is what I've settled on. Almost all weight slung low at frame (except fresh).
No batteries in house (especially under bed which is suicide).
All diesel heaters mounted outside of actual hab.
Underbed storage can be removed if I need to haul something long inside (trip to Home Depot, etc).
100 gal of fuel total.
Will remove and plug window at shower (reinstall at head of bed).
Window at sink will be square.
Adding 24" door.
Adding a drop-down porch the length of hab at door.

Great Coms, eventually will be doing just that, moving batteries/diesel heater exterior of Hab..Porch is in the priority list.. Learned a lot from here on the initial buildup and 4+ weeks of use.

I see a lot about cost, however, including truck/hab/solar/water/fridge, probably about 9k total, its not polished, but certainly works..

So don't let the cost push you away, you can do it cheaper

Yep. Cheap is good.

I'm not one of these "let's blow $100k on a camper build" guys.

I don't have it.

Lot's a retasked, scraps, RV takeoff, and surplus stuff.
