Why do the Hydraulic Head clips fall off.

Someone here was asking why do the HH clips fall off ( I think it was David). I found out while reading the Manual (what a concept, reading the manual ! ) that the HH must match the injection pump body. There is a different spring located under the HH for different models of pumps. Now this is just one reason the clips can fall off. I'm sure there are many more reasons why they fail, but I'm sure this is one.

I don't know Rusty but I do have a plunger that has a coating on it. I will grab it today and take a pic. I believe this coating makes the plunger stick and then causes a gap between the tappet and plunger. Then when it unsticks the two slam together maybe causing a hammering affect that knocks off the retainer clip. My.02 anyway.

How about just poor design... The engine in my truck does not even have a 1000 miles on it and the **** button popped off just from the truck sitting a few months without being run.

The tactical vehicle was designed for combat, endless fuel and **** be ****ed, forget the cost, lets do the conflict. The design encompasses the point of that there will be no tomorrow if She don't run.

It was designed to run to failure, once started She would not stop, How many hours, Nobody knows, but they all were designed to run and keep running.

Heck with the birds and bees
Run the truck a bit or else truck breaks
Time and money............... or run the truck.

OK, I like birds and bees stories,
but run the engine.
I am ready to be slammed.

If your running the 7 coil spring and the Hydraulic Head needs the 4 coil spring then your going to have trouble. Same thing if your running the 4 coil and need the 7 coil.

Actually this was a tractor engine before becoming a motor vehicle engine so I don't think your theory applies here.

I don't think people have been changing out there springs and tappets. If you did replace your head and took out a 90100A then put back in a 90100A then it should be correct. Here is the pic of the plunger and the discoloration. My collar even has problems sliding where it is. Think the crap fuel and not running the motors has the worst effect on the heads.

Exactly. The return spring forcing the plunger to the cam lobe should always maintain contact, when the plunger floats is when bad things happen. And that happens with bad fuel, varnish on the plunger or other debris causing stiction. The plunger should always be free.

last missing clip incident had a nasty varnished plunger. This never happens to vehicles running fresh, clean diesel that are run at least once a week.

How do we know what was in there in the first place ? Maybe some soldier replaced it with what was on the shelf at the time. Unless you take the time to check and see if your HH is matched to the injection pump you just don't know.
I'm only saying this is a possibility of a failure cause, NOT the failure cause for all Hydraulic Head buttons.

Yea you never know who what and if correct. I would still bet when it came to doing that deep of work it was someone that knew injection pumps. Was also put on the machine and spun up for testing. I am still finding fuel canisters not put together in the correct order.

James,

Now that you have the plunger out I would try and back-cut the slots for the retainer clip prongs so these prongs can be
bent-in past the vertical to keep retainer tight even if sticky.

I just received a new Chinese head and the retainer fell off in my hand when opening packaging.
Supplier is sending me new ones; we'll see.

Good luck,
Orren

You can tell when a truck likes you it does not give you any problems. Are you guys talking nice to them once and a while.

Floridianson is right. If the truck doesn't like you it will have all sorts of problems, but if you "sweet talk it" and tell it what a good truck it is then it will be happy and not break anything ! :) That's why our busses break constantly. The mechanics are swearing at them all the time ! Who likes to get cussed at ?
