Why this grip handle on M38 chassis?

Why were grip handles provided on the chassis of M38s? (See picture below). Was it for for easy lifting bare chassis?

Found the same handle in about the same place on my M38A1. It measures about 4in. or 101.6mm from bolt to bolt.

Those are the down points. There should be 2 on each side.
