Twenty-five former British GR9 Harriers in storage here at AMARG are undergoing reclamation for their landing gear and landing gear doors, speed brakes, antennas, and accumulators. According to a NAVSUP representative, the parts will be utilized by the U.S. Marines and the dollar value of these parts is estimated to be in the millions. F-16s being regenerated into drones

7/11/2013 - DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz., -- Less than three months after the last F-4 phantom II departed from the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group for drone conversion, maintainers here are already turning the wrenches on Air Combat Command's fourth generation of aerial targets, the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Very cool! My dad had a little to do with certain long-wing B-57s when he was a young LT in TMO at Kirtland. Neat to see that they're still getting it done. Will forward the story on to him.

The last A-10, 80-0273, to undergo the SLEP or service-life extension program at 309 AMARG departed today. Pilot, Maj "R2" Richardson, delivered the jet to Hill AFB in Utah where it will receive new paint before returning to operational service at Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz. The SLEP program was designed to double the original operational life of these ground-attack/interdiction aircraft.

Last B-52G Falls to New START

The last B-52G marked for destruction under New START is slated for execution today at Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz. While the Air Force currently operates the B-52H, retired B-52Gs stored at the boneyard still counted against the deployed nuclear delivery platforms allowed under treaty limits. "With the elimination of [serial number] 58-0224, 39 B-52Gs will have been eliminated as part of U.S. reductions in order to meet the treaty’s central limits by Feb. 5, 2018," according to a 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group release. The aircraft was initially delivered to the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, Calif., from Boeing's plant in Wichita, Kan., in January 1960. The bomber spent much of its career at Loring AFB, Maine, and flew strike missions from Guam during operations Arc Light and Linebacker II over Vietnam, according to USAF's Historical Research Center. A total of 97 B-52Gs "surgically cut" under both the START and New START agreements remain in storage at Davis-Monthan, 309th AMARG spokeswoman Teresa Pittman told the Daily Report. An additional 13 newer B-52Hs also are kept in storage intact, she added.

I will never forget driving on F-41 next to Wirthsmith AFB, Oscoda, MI. My Dad would always slow down and stop near the alert area. The SP's would alway stop their patrol trucks and get out. The SP's were in "pickle suits" and had the 20" rifles. I remember seeing the B-52G's sitting on the alert ramp with the ALCM's on the pylons. I can still hear my Mom asking what the grey things were hanging off the wings. I told her those were the nukes! That was really an amazing time to see a SAC base. I will never forget it!!

I hadn't carefully read the suffix to the BUF picture when I first saw it back in December. Now that I look more carefully, I see that it's a veteran of 42 BMW during Linebacker II and Arc Light. Chances are excellent that my dad flew combat missions in this acft...
