Ha, don't worry, I was about to ask how to pull the dipstick, I spent 15 minutes tugging at it, twisting it, and nothing would happen. sat and looked at it, then realized...Lefty loosey...

Remove and repair HH and inj lines, fuel pump, check fuel system function, replace oil cooler, replace differential, etc.?
No problem.
Install dipstick properly?

Donor truck, has air shift with rear PTO. Wish it had a trans, mine rattles badly in 1 and 5. One more thing to look at.

Snagged a parking brake lever, it was very rusted in to the shoe, took the big press to get it out. Noise and violence.

The trans cover from my truck, I think it was originally a winch truck, bottom part of the grill guard is missing like a winch truck. Gonna need a winch PTO and related lever, etc.

Now that she purrs and the valves don't make a racket, I discovered some exhaust leaks.

Fuel pump is toast, hit it direct with 24v and ground, nothing. Running the truck on an extra battery and Holley pump for now.

So...been a busy weekend. Went 'wheeling with a 923 (sweet!).

Had a guy mention a deuce for sale close to me. Got in touch with the guy, it's a '70. 5th is out, been sitting a year, lots of back fees owed and some on the loan to buy it, too. He says he's going to pay down the back fees and sell it for the remainder of the loan, which should be a decent price. Course mine is basically a parts truck but kinda special and I'm attached now...we'll see.

Don't need to govern it down at all. The LDS should be governed at 28-2900 or maybe 3200 even under no load. Can't remember specifically, but it is up there in the scary zone.

The Am Bosh pump specs in the link I posted somewhere earlier in the thread say 3200 is max for the pump. Per the chart in the general Multifuel manual TM 9-2815-210-34-2-1, 2800 is max hp for the LDS 465-2, pretty sure Bjorn posted that it has special mods for the RPM. Lightened pistons, etc. Everything else says 2600 max hp, dunno if that is max RPM.

The LDS-465-1 Troubleshooting manual http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showth...nual&highlight=lds-465+troubleshooting+manual no load speed test is 2850-2900 RPM. Also, Fuel pressure 75 psi, which is what mine does.

Got some stuff done last night. I have nothing nice to say about the process of changing/installing the air compressor belt, but I have air now, woohoo! Still need to bump up the pressure.

Had the temp gauge working, quit again, probably ought to just change it for a mechanical one, I think it's 12v.

I also removed, cleaned, and reinstalled the starter pushbutton. It was really rusty and cruddy, and I didn't think it would work anymore, but they don't make things like they used to. I just replaced a fried one on my VW sand rail the other day that wasn't old, but was lightweight and cheesy. I love the durability and simplicity of the deuce, pressure governor being another example. These days, some engineer would make it electric with a small computer to run it, and it would last 3 years, not 53 (and counting).

Got the shutoff cable backer nut behind the dash back on, got the throttle cable kinda working. Everything is just rusty and neglected...

I think I'm going to keep working on the A1 with the focus on the engine, clean up, check, PM, etc. with minimal expenditure in case I end up buying '70 A2. I also need to be working on other vehicles so I can sell them to buy the A2.

Been researching coolant flushing. Thinking CLR, but also thinking about pulling the intake and exhaust manifolds as I seem to have exhaust and oil leaks anyway. Then blast it out with the pressure washer. Have read of plugged up cooling ports in the heads, and it wouldn't surprise me if the the truck was running on water straight out of a canal. Oil cooler housing was pretty bad. On a more positive note, so far it doesn't get over 145 degrees idling around the shop, although I haven't determined yet if the thermostat is working, might be stuck open. Still gotta plug radiator holes and replace leaky, noisy water pump...

Had a few minutes, so I adjusted the air governor up. Now I have a slight leak out an open port in the side of what I believe is an old or type A style low pressure switch. The electrical to it is not hooked up, only the air supply. I read the TMs on replacing it but don't see this port mine has, or any reference to it. Found a pic on TNJ of one with a smaller hole. Wonder if something is missing or if it's an excess pressure vent. I think the TM called for 105 psi and I'm probably a little over.

Few years? Few months!

I was thinking about it earlier, this thread is going to be like one of those Haynes automotive vehicle repair manuals. Every manual based on a complete tear down and rebuild!

To come work at/run http://www.wymoreinc.com with my mom. Her dad (my grandpa) started it in '47. I've been here around 15 years now, worked my way up through the shop.

My dad still lives up there, works for a small railroad. He's a train nut as well as MVs.

You ever get over to Whidbey? I need to come visit, it's been far too long. Fort Casey (and a bunch of other stuff) is really cool to see.



Tonight I changed the oil, oil filters, and fuel filters. Runs better, but fuel filters were a hassle, turns out A1 primary and secondary filters are not the same as A2.

Also fixed the air leak at the low air pressure switch.

More pics n stuff later. I'm beat, gotta quit this late night nonsense. Really gonna regret it tomorrow.
