831a oil pressure switch problem solved

I picked up a pair of 831s from auction. I want to use one to run instead of the 803 for just a lighting load. Both were tier 2 reset and the hour meters on both read 2 hours and this matches the hour count on the reset tags. One unit starts and runs nicely and seems to function as it should. The other unit started and ran great until I shut it down to add more fuel. Upon restart the low oil pressure light stays on and it won't go to more than an idle. Also, the only way to shut it off now is to manually move the governor and shut it off. It worked perfect when it first started. What could have changed? Can someone point me to the correct troubleshooting procedure to figure out what is wrong with it?

Have you checked the oil? If the level is good you should remove the filter screen and inspect that as well.

Install a mechanical pressure gauge to find out if the problem is electrical or mechanical.

Another member here picked up a 813A kind of recently.
Experienced the same Low Oil Pressure issue. Turn out his oil pressure switch went bad.
As previously mentioned, be sure to verify oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

The reset tag says how many hours it was run after the reset not how many hours it was reset at. It could have 5000hrs.

Thanks guys. It's a bad pressure switch. I was reading TM and nothing seemed to make sense why it would work and then quit. I pulled the switch from the running unit and put it in the non running unit and it worked perfect. These engines are brand new so had to have been defective and only lasted a couple cycles.

Reset tags both say 2 hours and that is what is on both hour meters. Both engines are brand new. There wasn't even a single drop of oil spilled anywhere in the units. The generator heads had some age to them, but other than that these things looked brand new. My guess was that they had new engines installed and run for 2 hours for testing purposes after assembly. Both governors will need adjusted I think. TM seems to call for about 5/16-3/8" gap in governor if I'm reading that right. These both have a good 3/4" gap.

Did you change it to USPS instead of UPS? Mine was like $9 to ship which is about normal

I did see very similar switches when I was looking, but to keep the wiring harness the same I went with a Nason switch. If you don't mind cutting off the connector and crimping a spade connector on these would work fine. Shipping was about the same and I'd expect to pay around that to have anything small shipped anymore.

My 831a has a Nason 1M-2B-15F/67 pressure switch with two terminals. The photos for both the 14 and 15psi switches described here look like there are 3 terminals. Have you received your order yet? How many terminals are there?
