G749 preservation

I managed to grab a few pics at the end of the 2023 Stony Plain parade loading Veterans for a trip back to the Legion. https://stonyplainlegion.com/



This is one of the finest examples of a preserved Deuce out there. Here's an old 0-50mph run from inside.

We finally have most of the engines out of the old crates and have a half dozen engine stands available. They measure about about 19x16x37 once unbolted from the base.

The days will start getting shorter soon so it's a good time to talk about heaters. Many of the CDN deuces had under dash heaters that are hard to find so we're always on the look out for this style.



More recently a fantastic fella named Cliff was cleaning out his yard and passed along a different style of heater that mounts under the hood.



They come with hood intake, hose to the firewall, diffuse er, defrost flap for the windows and we're looking for the interior hoses. We're also digging around for the Arctic kit Winterization TM so we can be sure we have all the parts. Finding those one-off, after market CDN manuals is an adventure.



It always brings a smile visiting my buddies yard and the stockpile. We still have take-out 302 crates that haven't been opened.



Someone was wondering if we saved any Mutts the M151. I grabbed a picture so the answer is yes.......and no.

It's interesting that they put two different kinds of drain taps in them. Consistently inconsistent.

Looks like 5 ton heater kits to me. Very similar to the mlvw kits. The rubber connectors on the wiring would indicate at least the latter half of the 60s.

Edited to add: I stand corrected. That stock code is listed in the Canadian Deuce parts manual.

I have a M211 heater kit but it’s missing the angled scoop thing that bolts onto the hood.

Can you take measurements of one so I can create one?

Looks like 5 ton heater kits to me. Very similar to the mlvw kits. The rubber connectors on the wiring would indicate at least the latter half of the 60s.

cmpMAN we miss you around here. I ran that number on the boxes and came up dry but they did say 2 1/2 ton on the box. I was with a Mattech at that moment and didn't want to say anything about the military labeling things wrong. I think I found a third style maybe you've seen this type. What is the screen portion under the hood of this M211?? These trucks were hiding in Redwater with 1st Service btln stenciled on them and I would have really liked to save one.

I need to unpack some more so I'll grab a tape measure. They'd likely cost more to ship than the steel price so let's bend some metal.

That's the first thing I did was grab a hose and flex it when I heard......careful. They actually seem ok. Imagine sticking your hose in a box 50 or 60 years ago and pulling it out only to find it's not rotten. Good times.

The screen you are talking about is the protective cage of a Stewart Warner "Southwind" 978M gas heater. They were a great heater (when they worked) and you could set them high enough to cook pizza if you wanted. They will bolt in similar locations as the hot water heater. But the hot water heaters had a much higher reliability with very little maintenance issues. You could also crack the windshields if you directed the heat from the 978 if the glass was still arctic cold.

These are the heaters you will find mounted up on the van bodies of the deuce, or in the back of the M37 panel vans. There were adapter kits to put them into just about any military vehicle of any voltage from 6 to 24 volts. We were still having 6 volt ones show up when we would order a 24 volt heater back in the 80s.

Regarding your heater kits, I stand corrected. They are for the M135 family of deuce. I didn't notice the defroster deflectors or the extension on the intake fan. I just looked up that NATO number in my Canadian Deuce manual, and it is listed in there.

Oh man you found that NATO number, thank you. I can usually hunt that info down but the search terms, they are a changing, to quote Bob Dillon. I'm sure Mattech still has a few of those Southwind heaters around and the topic is interesting enough we will likely gather a heater collection for these newest wild fellas. https://valourpark.org/

I did this last week but got distracted by a marine, sorry. What's the scoop? Here's the scoop.

It's basically 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" base with 3 3/4" height off the hood. This one is 3 pieces with the top/angled/sloped piece requiring a 7" long x 5 1/4" rectangle to allow for a 6 1/2" slope with a 1/2" rear flange. The side flange(s) are real close to 3/4". It could be bent up as one piece unless we're going true museum status.



The scoop came with a part number in a kit and here it is.
