Curious old M49 fuel truck

1) Before you start with that oil pan: Note that the deep sump continues full width, almost down to the bottom.


2) Front crossmember & motor mounts: I managed to take just a couple pics - before the hornets got too irritated...

Then I found some loose parts in the junk pile, which made it all much easier to measure:
Inside the crossmember and perfectly centered to it is a 13x3.5x2.25in piece of #3/16" C-channel. Two pair of rivets, 5 inches apart, hold it firmly in place.

On top of that assembly - and attached to it with just two 1/2"bolts - rides a "table" (13"x 10") which supports the engine to the back and also the radiator at the front.

That surface has a slight incline, down to the rear, actually the same as the whole powerplant, about 3°

The (vertical) distance between that plane/table and the underside of the block (where the pan goes attached) is exactly 4.5 inches
The motor mounts themselves measure roughly 3x3x1.5in.

3) Fenders/louvers: To the inside both fenders have vertical walls and running parallel to the frame, unlike the MF. Pass side has an indent (20x24x7x8in) to the top rear, to make room for the air filter.

I'm really impressed, that you take the motto from your messages so seriously.

For years I wanted to build a model of a Vietnam-era deuce, but all the references I had so far were only those for much later multi-fuels. But now, thanks to you, I slowly see my dream comin' true!

I'll re-do that oil pan sump and when I look at the necessary corrections to the fenders, I wonder if it wouldn't be better to 3D-print the fenders too.

I kind of feel your pain because I did some modelling too, in my much younger years. It's always great when you have access to the real thing - or at least to someone who does.......

Yes, gasser and MF fenders are very different, under the hood. I have many, pulled loose. So, if you need more details just say so.

As you can see the motor mount crossmember is also there. Please let me know if you see something off here. I'd like to know If I got the fender channels right and if the front crossmember position is OK.

I'm going to add some innards around the engine to make it look busy.

Thanks a lot for providing the dimensions. Looks like my front crossmember is too far back on the digital model. Looks like I have another understanding problem here - the "table" on the front crossmember, does it stick out substantially forward of the front fender edges? I thought it should be almost in line with the front fender edges, because the radiator doesn't stick out too much forward.

A small update - I added some "innards" around the block to make it look busy. The front crossmember is still too far back, like I wrote above. The exhaust pipe would be a little over 4'' in diameter - looks a bit much for me, but that's also how it is in the kit:

Yes, about 4.5"
I took an old drawing I posted long ago and added that plate with the radiator in the right location.
From the fender edge to center of rad stud holes I measured 3.35" (could be +/- 0.1)

The exhaust pipe would be a little over 4'' in diameter - looks a bit much for me, but that's also how it is in the kit:

It is less than 3 inches, actually. I just posted that here, a few days ago....

Hey, this is a cool drawing! A real treasure for a modeller! Now I can check all the important dimensions in the AFV Club kit!

If I move the front crossmember 4,5 scale inches forward, then it will be spot on with your measurements, but I'll probably have to adjust the front motor mount. But I'm moving closer to 3D printing it!

I even got carried away and have drawn the belt drive and the weird radiator fan, although probably very little will be visible of this:



I think I need to draw up the steering box - it's missing from the kit. Would it be a box like this:

Or does the "gasser" have a different design?

And I'm still working on the parts for the tanker body.

What printer are you using? I use a resin machine for small things, mostly miniatures.

Hello! Thanks a lot for your comment!
By printer I mean a guy who is printing stuff for me. From the beginning - and I started my adventure with 3D in 2018 - I decided to concentrate on CAD work in the hope to always be able to find some state of the art printer with some free time - and so far it works for me just fine. I just know it's one of those printers where a layer of liquid resin is hardened by light from a display.

From my experience most FDM printers (where plastic is heated and then extruded through a nozzle) aren't useful for modelling, but I successfully used them for tool parts. Exception to this would be the printers Shapeways used to print Frosted Ultra Detail parts - but those were not as good as the resin printers.

Like I said - I'll post some photos once I have the parts in my hands!

Hello everybody!

The real fun begins now - I got my 3D printed parts from the printer today. Here's how they look like:

The thread-plate looks a little coarse in 3D and in close up, but in person it's just fine. There's a whole jungle of supports there - removing them is a bit like solving a puzzle, that can be fun, too! I hope to post some assembly photos soon!

Let's get back to the real world - I put the wings on the frame:



I printed them with the supports that help to keep them straight. After the glue (CA) sets, they will be cut off at the red lines.

Then I dry fitted the parts:



Looks like everything fits, yay!

In this case I can start putting everything together:



The photo above also has the 3D printed steering gear and the front exhaust pipe made of 2mm soldering wire and also muffler made of leftover sprue and plastic sheet.

I also wanted to ask you three questions:

1) starting/jumper cable connector on the rear right of the cab - would a Vietnam-era M35 have it?

2) what would an old M35 need in terms of air inlets? Would there be this round hole on the front of the left side panel under the hood? Would there be a "mushroom" inlet for the air filter on the right?

3) I've found this picture of an Aussie M35 (and it's a beauty):



I think the red circled detail is also in my reference picture:



So what is that part and does anybody have a close up of it?

I believe that's a mounting bracket for mounting the M66 gun ring or light weapon station. I think many trucks came from the factory with the bracket. My M35A3 has that bracket, though it's somewhat obscured by the muffler and exhaust pipe.
