Despite the good advise, warnings and predictions from the experienced, the sages and from naysayers, I placed myself squarely in the Netherlands of 1st Deuce Purgatory.

Many forum contributors recommend 1st truck purchases be from from private parties.

I did not.

Alot of the good people on this forum recommend I buy locally.

I did not.

I thought I bought smart and received a good deal.

The following weeks auctions proved otherwise.

I thought the reports of the new speedy EUC process would whisk me away to MV ownership nirvana.

It did not.

I figured the friendly, name brand "For Profit" insurance companies would like to underwrite my new truck.

They do not.

I thought the more specialized collector/historic MV insurance companies would take my premium money.

Nope.

I thought I could negotiate favorable transport costs to move my purchase to my storage place.

I thought wrong.

Yet, in spite of the obvious gap between expectations and reality, besides the inability to produce results, I am absolutely thrilled to be joining y'all in MV ownership.

Most of this crap in my head is the nervous chatter from waiting: Second guessing the specific purchase and the whole reasoning for purchasing any truck in the first place for that matter.

I'll work through the EUC process, taking command of the communications and updates through calls and chat.
Receiving a invoice marked "Paid" from GL will put me back in action and the chatter will stop.

I'll find an insurance carrier who says yes to my needs and situation.

I'll pay what it takes to get the truck home.

Just thought you might all relate to the waiting period thoughts of a first time buyer and want to reflect on your experiences.

THANKS TO YOU ALL. YOUR EXPERIENCE AND GENEROSITY ARE A VALUED CONTRIBUTION.

Rick Chalmers

I once read that "this thread is worthless without pics."

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Looks like you bought a very nice truck. I'm in the same boat as you. Still waiting for the EUC to clear. Oh well. I've been reading as much as I can about these trucks on this site, downloading and reading technical manuals and buying the various fluids and filters I need for when I am able to get the truck.

Just keep jumping through the hoops one at a time till there ain't no more, nice looking truck.
Thanks Tom, that's all there is to do.

Just waiting for the next hoop. GL has had my EUC application for over a week. I confirmed on Wednesday via the chat line that they received it. It would be nice to see a change in EUC status on my sale, but I'll just keep calling or chatting every few days....

It does look good! I see some rust under the driver window and the wiper arm is missing. Radiator looks new or recently painted. Interior looks complete. I think the seats are different. What do you cvall that mounting system?

I'm in your same boat Rick. Waiting on the eu. I havn't checked into insurance - yet. I can't see why basic liability would be a problem to get. I also disregarded all advice and bought without inspecting about 9 hours away. Your truck looks really sharp, hope it runs as good as it looks. I also got some technical manuals and of course all the good information from here. Now just the wait.

Nice truck!!!
Its your location that has me wondering.
Are you a US citizen?
Where was the auction?
Where will you be taking the truck - and how?

Hi Jinx! (sorry)

Yeah, I watched your thread with interest. Seems we were on the same quest and time line for a purchase. Looks like we ended up with the same decision to go via auction.

I had the same considerations regarding values and especially owner added value. While I could find some value in the offerings, it wasn't enough to make me decide to go private party.

Best wishes to you and your new to you truck. Please pass on your insurance recommendations when you get there.

Hey Roscoe,

I've seen you chime in here and there, how are ya? Post up on your purchase or add a link.

Man, basic liability is elusive. I'm not done yet, but I've received these reasons for rejections thus far:

1) My daily driver is too old (1960 Studebaker Lark Wagon)
2) I don't drive my daily driver enough (less than 1000 miles per year)
3) The vehicle is too heavy (13,500lb)
4) It has too many axles (3)
5) It may be used off-road (duh)
6) I'll be driving it out of the country and canceling the insurance after 6 months (truth hurts)

Maybe SS could add a forum for obtaining insurance.

Or better yet, how about SS, OD group insurance??? The power of the numbers and all that.

Please post up when you find a insurance solution that others may be able to take advantage of.

Thanks!

Yep, US citizen living abroad.

The auction was in Maryland, 2465 miles from my home base in San Diego.

My current plan is to use an East Coast friend as a resource and send the truck to Long Island, NY for storage while performing titling and registration. The ride will be $700 and NY titling/ins costs are expensive for this boy on a budget, so if anyone has a cost cutting method of storing/titling/registering this beast, please pipe up!

Later this year I'll be driving it down here to CR to start some jungle/beach tours. Should be a blast!

Cheers,

Rick

Got to love a truck with a boxseat. For some of us.........that's the only way to go.

I like the way the heater is mounted. Can't say I've seen one done like that. Or maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

Just keep checking with GL.
Boxseat!!!

I like!!! I am imagining it's a big tool box??? Got any details and pics of yours?

Uh, heater? I will probably be removing that unless it pipes hot air onto the windshield for cutting fog on the inside of the glass.

Thanks Westfolk, GL is my friend....

goldneagle,

Thanks, man! I have their application on my desk top and their website bookmarked (in addition to three other companies).

I'll be contacting them this week. I'll let you know if it helped to drop Carol's name!

Cheers,

Rick

Nice truck! Good luck with your new acquisition I hope she runs as well as she looks!
Holy Cow, I just looked at photos of your 5 ton. It's beautiful! Is it in your hands?

It's got a lift gate! Now that's smart loading, there!

Best wishes and happy motoring,

Rick

I would be carefull about plans to drive it out of the country. I am not sure if it is legal. The US is becoming more strict about border controll and transporting anything military across the Mexician border. There are more and more concearns about guns and drugs every week. Last I heard the US National Guard was being deployed to the border out of concearn that drug lords had taken several border towns.
If you try to go just make sure you have all the proper paperwork including a export license.

Thanks, and yes it's important to unravel the tangle of border crossing requirements. I have contacted the Border Patrol, the DOD and BIS, AM General, a SS forum "exporter", other exporters in Miami, Port of Everglades and Moblie, the FBI and CIA, the AFL-CIO, the NAACP and LAPD.

I have found out that most export legal worries are isolated here on this forum. Out there in the real world, these trucks are flowing from out of our ports every day, without much fanfare or hassle.

Just to mention, your last sentence sounds like you are advising me I need a license. I do not. I need proper documentation regarding end user, destination and such to export. I have found inexpensive sources for these things, so there's no need to apply for a license.

There are a few specific things to take care of, and I will certainly be crossing borders legally. I have to. Costa Rica and the US are trade buddies. If the Gov calls this truck back, I'll have to cough it up!

And as for border in-stability, well that's not isolated to Northern Mexico, I'll have a few other borders as well. My wife wants me to paint the truck before leaving, to hide the camoflage. Looks like I'll be doing some painting...

Best regards,

Rick
