A town in nj recently had 3 hmmwvs up for sale--an ambulance, 2 door and a 4 door--i bid up to $13600 on each--the ambulance had 800 miles and the other 2 had under 3000 miles--the 2 door was driven into a lake by some very smart person to see what would happen and waisted the motor--the other two were clean--there were 5 days left in the sale when the listing dissipered--if the auction continued the trucks could have done 18k plus each and the town would end up with over $50000--when i called the town to see what happened a guy who worked there told me the town received a call and they were reminded that they were borrowing the trucks and did not own them--the feds wanted them back for proper disposal-------alomst got them sold--next time they should not list things on the internet

Proper disposal of an Humvee, that means its disposal as RESIDUE due to its demilling right..... I hear that GM who still owner the Hummer trade name at the time was really T'ed off at the Marine Corps for releasing all those that they did, and the commandant got a slap on the hand for it.... They want to treat them like the MUTT's, chop them up and crush them. Might mean somebody will not but a "Hummer", like I'd want one.....:

Sounds like we have one of two things here....

1: A Bureaucrat that had no clue as to municipal ownership/Uncle's Loaner Programs

OR

2: A Classic example of a jurisdiction having a hint of corruption - "The best politicians money can buy!"... Can you spell G R A F T and C O R R U P T I O N ?

(PS: there is a good reason I moved to Texas from New Jersey many years ago - - - NO, it was NOT mafia related rofl)

There is another thread on SS right now about the Feds taking back what is theirs to begin with. Imagine if you had won the auction only to have the Feds show up at your door and demand back their ( read taxpayers ) property.

Dont think it can't happen just because you bought it from someone other than the Feds themselves.

It does happen and has happened to me twice! They show up take your stuff and give you a receipt and a pamphlet that tells you how to sue the seller in court.aua

One was armor I bought off Ebay, the other was a M932A2 truck tractor bought at auction from a County.

Recently, within the past three years, an acquaintance bought at auction a M113. He was able to keep it as it was abandoned by a foreign government here and did not belong to the US Government. He assured Uncle that the vehicle would not be sold to another without notifying the government. That settled it for the time being.

About six or seven years ago the son of a wealthy former Presidential candidate purchased two F-5 jets for parts from a closed VFW and a scrap yard in AZ. After spending about $6 Million to make it flyable he was informed that it still belonged to the government. It sits in a DoD approved museum now, on loan from Uncle.

And, finally, Civil War cannon tubes are frequently sold by cemeteries to collectors. They normally get a visit from Uncle to collect the artifact, as they were loaned a hundred years ago to the cemetery. Whether it goes to the cemetery again, I do not know, or sent elsewhere to a museum is anyone's guess.

Just because it is for sale does not mean you can buy it.

My brother had that happen with some radio equipment he bought from GL. He got a registered letter explaining his purchase was Gov. property and wanted him to return it. He sent back to them explaining that he already sold the aforementioned equipment. Never heard anymore about it. Suppose it was tracked thru GL somehow?

Did he pass on who he sold it to?

They do not scrap the HMMWV trucks there is actualy a core charge on them and AM General takes them back and rebuilds them and sells them back to the gov. The 3 in NJ were owned by the town and there was a call made as to why they were being sold and the local OEM had the auction ended because they wanted them. They are still there and are in the process of repair for the local OEM.

I'm going to agree with #1.. I can easily see someone in local government thinking that they owned something that may have been loaned to then years before.
