M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

It seems it's time I learned more about the cooling system. The temp light went on, so I pulled into a convenient AutoZone parking lot. I set up shop in the back and worked while the engine cooled. I poured a bucket of water into the radiator, and got a small, steady stream of water pouring...

I'm sure glad I got the new kick-down switch installed yesterday. It helps a lot jumping into narrow gaps in traffic, and it gets my 0-60 time down to Tuesday. But I never would have predicted what happened today on the way home. Imagine a bright blue springtime sky, sitting at a red light on...

Thanks for the clarification. The kick-down switch engages only when the pedal is floored, so I guess there *is* a difference in downshifting manually -- you have to ease up on the gas first. I find the notion of CUCV racing kind of amusing... My truck doesn't feel particularly race-oriented...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

I ordered a NOS kick-down switch on flea bay. Several parts supplier sites took my money, and then refunded it a few days later with an apology that the part is no longer available. Driving a CUCV up a steep hill without a kick-down switch reminds me of an old Chinese proverb. "The ox is...

On the passenger side, the push rod doesn't connect to the vent door. I'm digging through the TMs in search of clues...

I am very curious about the black part that's visible at the top of your accelerator arm. That's the part I am missing. If anyone has one, or has pictures of one, I'd be very interested to see them. I replaced it with a flat washer, but I don't really know what it was I was replacing. Thanks!

So it appears that the parts that flew past my face were parts of the kickdown switch. Maybe when the zip tie parted, that allowed the accelerator arm to exceed the range of motion of the switch.

My cable has the end swage. It's missing a part that sits between the 2 swages and fits in the hole in the accelerator lever arm. I tried pushing the cable through the firewall. I'd have to remove all the insulation in order to be able to compress the "ears" and push the cable through. Too...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

Well that was miserable. When I played football, I was Left Tackle, so you can imagine how well I fit under the dash of a CUCV. I can't get more than one hand on the cable at a time, so my options are limited. I split a short length of hose, wrapped it around the last 2" of the cable, and...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

I've been feeling like the truck is pretty solid and reliable, until this morning.Heading into work, traffic was heavy and I had to step on the gas to get into a narrow gap. When I stepped on the gas, I heard a "snap", something flew past my face, and the accelerator pedal was no longer...

Maybe file this one under "stupid CUCV tricks". I considered a number of schemes for setting up a table. This approach proved simplest. I carry a backboard anyway. I mount it on the attendant's seat, using the seat belt and 2 lengths of parachute cord. It's as stable as most foldable camp...

Forget the birds and the flowers. The real definition of Spring is when AntennaClimber's Glowplug controller card stops turning on the "Wait" light. Should we have a thread for "Stupid CUCV Tricks?" I can remove the key while the engine is running. This let's me keep the parking gate fob on...

Once this one is done, my son wants one. I may get to keep the third one.

Just a quick update. Lots has happened, but little info of value to the group. New tires (Cooper RTX). They have lots of siping, so hopefully they'll do well on ice. Old tires failed in the cold. Turns out the spare was never used, factory original, 33 years old! It crumbled quickly in...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

Well, I feel like an idiot! You guys ROCK! Thanks! In my defense, I have to get into an unfamiliar yoga position just to reach a camera back there to take a picture of the thing... It never occurred to me that I would have 2 connectors there...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

The M1010 has 4 focus lights in the back. One of the switches failed. I couldn't find an exact replacement, so I replaced it with a toggle switch. It's not original, but the light works now. I had to grind down the toggle switch to make it fit. I didn't modify the light, so I can go back to...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

Once I get the M1010 fully up to speed, it will be her call. She has a Subaru Outback which currently serves as her base of operations. The M1010 would clearly get her further back into the mountains, and has more space to serve as her base camp/lab. It's also more awkward to drive around...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

Put the cover on the M1101 today. The bolts and washers were sealed in plastic, yet still had white corrosion. I soaked them in Naval Jelly, hit them with rust reformer, and put them in. I'll likely need to replace them with SS hardware eventually, since they seem to be bright steel, but...
