m1010 lower alternator belt I'm maxed out on the range of adjustment for my lower alternator. The 52" Dayco belt has about 1,000 miles on it, and it's stretched to the point that I need to replace it. I wanted to go with a shorter belt, so it won't stretch out, and in hopes of gaining some...

Jack/jack-stand combination I used this jack/jack-stand combination tonight. It's not the highest quality tool I've ever used, but for less than $50 from Sears, it's safer than a bottle jack, and takes up less space than a bottle jack and a jack stand. The head is a little safer than the flat...

I have had AAA Premier for decades, for all drivers in my family. In 2010, I had to move 2 vehicles 400 miles with 1 driver, so I put the S10 on a trailer and towed it with the C3500 crew cab dually. Half way there, I had a problem with the C3500. I called AAA and, after sending several tow...

No, I'm not sure. My M1010 replaced a C3500 crew cab dually that was about 3' longer and 18" wider than the M1010. AAA wouldn't touch that C3500, so I had to go to the StateFarm RV service. I just kept it when I switched to the M1010.

Spare tire storage, and changing a tire Since I needed to take off the front wheels to replace the kingpin springs to fix my death wobble, I figured this would be a good time to rotate the tires, and test out the gear and process for changing a flat -- massive failures on several levels...

paint your Lisle 12400 If you get the Lisle 12400, I recommend painting it a very bright color. I end up doing much of my work at night, outdoors with a work light, and a black tool can be hard to spot among the black belts and the black engine parts. It would be very easy to leave that tool...

Loose belts My belts were loose. To measure belt tension, I got a Dayco Krikit https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=168&v=z11wfc-0-hY Amazon sells it as "Gates 91107 Belt Tension Tester" To help with tensioning belts, I got a Lisle 12400, and used it with a 24" breaker bar. Table E-2 in...

As an experiment, I dropped the air pressure in my front tires from 58 to 50PSI. Yuck! The truck seems to lean all over the place. But I can't get it to death wobble any more...

Tire Pressure? GM Service Manual gives the following max loads for differnt tire pressures for E rated radials on C-K trucks. 36PSI 1742 lbs 44PSI 1984 lbs 51PSI 2205 lbs 58PSI 2425 lbs 65PSI 2623 lbs 73PSI 2844 lbs 80PSI 3042 lbs The data plate on my truck says the max load is 3685 on...

Will do. That was my instinct. I read some articles that said the frame was a better ground than a dedicated wire. I'm reluctant to send 300A of 24VDC into a frame. I want to control exactly where that goes. I guess I'll need to replace the horn suppressor then, and any others that have...

Tonight, the Fluke 375 showed 0.5A on the wire leading from the batteries to the 12V Distribution Block, and 0A on the wire leading to the 24V Distribution Block. I removed everything from the fuse block, all fuses, flashers, and the tap feeding my tinytach. It made no difference. So my...

Wayward amps OK. I took lots of measurements, the sum total of which leave me confused. I'll start with the measurement that seems most significant. In the picture below, the heater control cable passes through the firewall into the engine compartment. 3 wires are together in a flat ribbon...

I haven't installed the inverter or winch yet. I'm trying to get the basic truck running right before I make it more complicated. When I do install them, *should* I run a dedicated ground return wire? My instinct says yes, but I've read that it's better to use the frame. That seems like a...

I just hope it's correct. We have experts here on SS. They provide reliable information. I'm just a newbie. Your local technical High School likely offers adult night classes that would teach you about this stuff, if you really want to learn it. They taught me to weld.

Sort of. My understanding of "parasitic load" is that it's designed into the device and intentional. Like if you turn your TV off, it isn't completely off. Part of it is powered up and "listening" for your remote to tell it to turn back on. I have the electrical equivalent of a plumbing...

battery drain I ran a few errands in the M1010 this morning, including picking up my Fluke 375. Now I have a real meter to use in understanding the wiring. When I returned, with the engine and all switches off including the Service Light, I measured about half an amp on each of the + wires...

cucvrus said he has several in inventory. Other M1010 owners said they removed theirs. I said I'd refinish mine and live with it for a while, then decide if it's an asset or a liability.

Got the Attendant's seat reassembled and installed. No rust and a fresh coat of paint. We'll see if it's an asset or a liability. At least it's not rusting. Installed the LMC headlight mod. They sent me the version for separate high and low beams. I cut out the extra socket. I needed to...

This dampened my enthusiasm for the GV unit. I had to dig around a bit to find the details on this, but I found them. Plethoraofguns blew an engine on the highway when his speedometer cable failed, causing his gear vendor unit to disengage, overreving his engine and breaking the crankshaft...
