M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

Wow. Thanks! I was hoping someone with expertise in this area would chime in. It will take me a little time to digest this. I do have one point of confusion that i can articulate. why is it that the lower alt can contribute amps when the alts are wired in series, but not when "nested" as in...

This sounds like a very clean solution. The only down side is fewer amps of 24V power. If I'm right in assuming you're using the 160A 12V alts, that gives you 160A of 24V available from the alternators. The original Plan B mod gives you 280A of 24V power from the alternators, if I understand...

Thanks, tim292stro, for taking the time for such a detailed post. The stock M1010 has 2 200A 24V alternators and a device called a DUVAC. The bottom alternator charges the 24V battery bank. The top alternator provides 12V power to the vehicle, and charges the front battery, which is the one...

Plan B Mod Battery charging performance My dashboard voltmeter says I'm just barely over the line into the red zone, so I looked into this. I measured voltages with a meter at 4 times: With the engine idling, and without having done anything to drain the batteries prior to starting. With the...

Absolutely! The Ready Welder already lives in the truck. I used it yesterday to weld a part to the truck. I haven't taught her to weld yet, but that's on the list.

Ready Welder I got my Ready Welder from Tin H Do at http://www.wcxsports.com/welders.html. wcxsports@yahoo.com. He had the best price at the time, but that was years ago. YMMV. I had an e-mail conversation with him to discuss models and options, and he steered me to the best model/price for...

True. The Ready Welder will handle *much* more power than a home MIG machine can produce. I used mine in the driveway. Once I get my NATO slave connector set up, the Ready Welder will be just as convenient as a home MIG machine when at home, and far more useful in the field.

Ready Welder In that photo, my cloth helmet bag sits on the open lid of my Ready Welder set. http://readywelder.com has all the details. The black plastic case contains the Ready Welder MIG gun and the wires that feed it. You circled the optional Cold Switch, a red box containing a relay...

Yes. I just need more practice. That's a *lot* of power... I learned on much more tame MIG machines.

boarding ladder latch plate welded The good news is that I got the welding done, and now the boarding ladder can't vibrate out of its slot. The bad news is that this was the ugliest weld I've ever made. I blame it on unfamiliar equipment and lack of practice. It's been years since I welded...

Proper crankcase vacuum retains oil On the 600 mile recovery drive from GA to PA, the M1010 used about 6 quarts of oil. I assumed it needed new seals. After reading threads on SS about how the 6.2 uses a slight vacuum in the crankcase to retain oil, we replaced the oil cap, CDR and vacuum...

Agreed. I wasn't sure if POs had changed the gearing. This is my first MV/CUCV, so I couldn't tell for sure by the sound. TinyTach was a cheap and easy way to find out that they had not. I also noticed that there seems to be no RPM limiter or governor. On a long, steep downhill stretch, I...

CUCV Hotfoot After an hour on the interstate, the painted steel floor and transmission hump were so hot they were uncomfortable to touch. I don't know what the coolant temp was, but the idiot lights never came on indicating high temps. My wife had her iced tea bottle resting between the seat...

After about 4 hours driving with the tinytach, I found no surprises. The gearing appears 100% stock. The speedometer seems to indicate 3mph faster than the gearingXRPMXtireCircumference math predicts. Now that I've confirmed this, I no longer have much need of a tach. I'll cross-check the...

2 visible signs of progress: TinyTach replaces ash tray. Pouch for cell phone will go beneath tach. This preserves CUCV look when closed. I'm not sure what the final dashboard arrangement will be. I'm still thinking about comms and gauges and switches for things like doghead's GP Controller...

My passenger side ankle vent is missing the part that connects the vent door to the control handle. The door and handle are present and working, but the parts that connect them are missing. Are these parts available? Or do I need to buy a new door? The 30 TM doesn't show these parts...

So after a solid week of disassembly, grinding, wire brushing, scrubbing, bleaching, welding, lubricating, painting, and reassembly, the truck looks exactly the way it did when I started. The lights work properly, a few visible rust spots are gone, and much formerly hidden rust is gone. But...

Agreed. It's great for battery posts. I also use it on all electrical connections, especially grounds and antennae. Whenever I'm about to make an electrical connection I never want to see again, I coat it with this stuff. My old boss had a saying. "99% of electrical problems are connector...
