M1009 Off Road Design 3" lift w/Shackle Flip

It sits 1" lower in back. But that is with a full load of tools, winch, jack, tire chains. From what I read, the 6.2 is heavy enough that over time the Tuff country springs will settle down an inch. Good to know about those rear shackles though. Maybe I'll unload this stuff. Don't normally drive...

M1009 Off Road Design 3" lift w/Shackle Flip

My old front springs had sacked out so bad, they were the shape of an "s". The bushings were shot as I found when I swapped axles with my 1976 K5. This m1009 now rides on a 12 bolt rear and Dana 44 front axle. I have never lifted any of my vehicles. But in a moment of crazy, I decided to pull...

    Broken Glow Plug Question

Ahh. Thank you. I wondered about your intention. In that case; soup can away! The idea here is to have 8 working glow plugs at all times. Any less and you'll burn plugs. The fact that one of them heatd a soup can instead of the pre-chamber will only be a minor stumble on startup. But it is...

    Broken Glow Plug Question

Not trying to discourage you. Everybody learns sometime. But pulling the heads is not going to be cheap or fast. If you are going to the trouble and expense; go all the way the first time. I have never seen anyone sorry they did a complete valve job on any engine. But ive seen plenty who went...

    Broken Glow Plug Question

Have you ever removed the cylinder heads from an engine? Not being sarcastic. There are some differences and special tools and things you will need. Once the head is off, take it to a machine shop and have them remove the glow plug. Pay to have both heads stripped, cleaned, and magnafluxed. Then...

    Broken Glow Plug Question

He could run 7 in the head and the 8th could be threaded into a tin can and secured to the engine.

    Broken Glow Plug Question

It may not help now, but Snap-on makes or made a special socket for 6.2 glow plugs. Here, i have one; It is a 6 point 3/8" deep well with a few special traits. It has a spring clip to hold the glow plug in the socket. It has an internal stop to keep the plug from falling all the way into the...

    Excessive blow by ???????????

After some research i have found discussion regarding sudden increases in blowby caused by bad turbo seals. What happens is the seals allow compressed intake or exhaust gasses into the return oil line. The engines run fine and do not smoke and the turbo impellers have no excessive play. Just the...

    Excessive blow by ???????????

The idea being to hear if it sounds uneven while turning over without starting. Not a replacement for a compression test, but it's easy. Just 10 seconds or so.

    Excessive blow by ???????????

I am impressed someone is counting. How does it sound if you turn it over with the fuel shutoff disconnected? I am wondering if you burned a hole in a piston. Maybe worn or broken rings. Compression check is your best bet. I'd do it now before any real damage is done to the block!!!!!!!!!!!!! (13)

    Excessive blow by ???????????

Compression test. Leak down test. Hard to believe you lost rings in a matter of days. How's your coolant looking? Oil? Blown head gasket?

    T Rex Grille

I got tired of looking at the cheap chinese knockoff grille my m1009 had since the incident with the pine tree.. Installed a T Rex grille made in USA! Very heavy duty polished stainless steel. I know the purists will hate it. But i am not allowed to have a plastic grille. Just don't survive...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

It would be a "fixed yoke conversion". Google it. Not worth the trouble. I had just traded a 55 M38A1 for that 84 K5. The first thing I did was take it wheeling. It immediately spit the front u joint out of the rear driveshaft. Lucky i had that soda bottle. Course now i bring a spare ujoint.

IP problem, center bolt/shaft came loose

Yes. Crack injector lines loose and try cranking w key on. That will tell you right there if it is an ip pump. Assuming lift pump volume. Shutoff solenoid etc are working.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I love tools. Buy them every chance i get. There is simply no comparison to having the right tool for the job. That being said; it is still fun trail rigging stuff. Particularly when the tools are there but the right parts aren't. Lost the rear drive shaft on my 84 K5. Same t case as the m1009...

IP problem, center bolt/shaft came loose

Does the fuel shutoff solenoid have power in the crank position of the key? I would hook up a volt meter to the shutoff lead and route the leads so i could watch the meter from inside. Then crank the engine and observe. Could be an ignition switch failure. Give that a check.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

No doubt. Someday I am going to have saved enough to buy land and build my shop. Mechanics that know the arcane ways are getting hard to find. As i just turned 49 today.. i am feeling more arcane all the time!

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Torque King in Billings Montana has a special tool to facilitate inner axle seal replacement. Basically a jack screw with aluminum plates the size of the seal. I am sure you could fabricate one. Did mine when i replaced ball joints, axle joints etc. You will need a case spreader to get the...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I managed to drag the m1009 3 miles over the snow to the shop. Going to install an Off Road Designs 3" lift kit with shackle reversal in the rear. The front springs are shot. Why not upgrade? First i had to dig out 5 feet of snow. I am thawing out the gravel. Might take a few days. Why do a...
