My deuce had the chain bolted on with the threads on the bolt buggered up with a chisel. The M923 has a welded chain.

    Pyro gauge question

Most likely the pyro probe is a Type-K thermocouple, so any meter designed for that thermocouple type should work. You can calibrate the meter by sticking the probe in boiling water, 212 °F.

    Stripping an Aluminum comm box

I would use the stripper and avoid the sander. I don't know if there is any anodizing or other coating on the bare aluminum, but sanding would probably ruin it. I have a friend who restores aircraft and they have a slick blaster that uses crushed dry ice as the media. The chunks of dry ice...

    Don't lose your nuts !

#12 thread is indeed a less common UNF thread. It is so close in size to 1/4-28, that most design engineers just specify the slightly larger 1/4 inch thread.

They buck like a bronco at speeds over about 20 MPH, especially empty, so don't plan on towing it down the highway.

You get the "Iron Balls McGinty" award for driving that far in the summer desert heat. Thanks for sharing the story and photos.

What the hey? Need a little M1008 help, please.

Fill it up again and see how much fuel you put in. Then divide how far you drove by how much fuel you put in and you get your MPG. Use this figure as a ball park of how much fuel you will use in the future. My 5-ton gets around 5 MPG, so if I have to go 100 miles, I will use 20 gallons. I...

What the hey? Need a little M1008 help, please.

Don't rely on your gas gage to tell you the amount of fuel used. They are notoriously inaccurate in military vehicles, even in the semi-civilian CUCV's. You should get something like 14 MPG cruising empty. M1009's can get 19-20 MPG.

    Civilian trailer behind a M931

I would check the overall height with a tape measure also before heading out.

I live 1/2 a mile from Route 66. A buddy and I are planning on running part of the Bankhead Convoy, at least Yuma to San Diego. We are also thinking of the 2017 convoy, maybe Demming, NM to LA.
