I replaced my cylinder heads with NOS during my rebuild due to cracking and the machine shop being unenthusiastic about fixing them; I ordered the heads from TNJ Murray. What showed up in original brown foam filled boxes were late 1990' castings, complete with valve train, ready to mount and...
The Deuce is also not a forgiving off road beast. It weighs 12,000 lbs so it needs every bit of traction the 6 wheels can provide. As soon as the ground gets soft or sandy, the operator is called upon to work on tire pressure to get optimal traction. The open diffs mean that, as soon as one...
I know that in temperatures that we have here in the summer (30 plus C/90F and up) my Deuce did perfectly fine WITHOUT the mechanical fan, just cooled by the air flowing through the rad when driving. Temps would climb immediately when stopped, though.
From what you are telling us it seems to me...
@davidm2232 I think you nailed it with "gotten used to it". It is all in what you are used to. There are people that daily drive the M35A2 and they (and their body) know what experience to expect and drive/plan accordingly. Is it do-able? As you demonstrated, sure it is! There also are 1001...
@ldmack3
When my LDT went kaputt, I had no way of getting it out or moving the disabled truck around. I have no real shop and had no engine hoist or engine stand.
If I did not tackle the job, I would have to sell the truck, which I did not want to do and I would be lucky to find a buyer for a...
I do not doubt the assessment on the pistons. I do want to say that, when I rebuilt my LDS I took a deep breath when I saw the tops of my pistons and was convinced that #6 had a hole in it and others were at least cracked.
Panic post (#17) is here...
As for cleaning chemicals, that is why I follow the advice of much more experienced folks here that have suggested the CASCADE tabs and I have been using them with very good success. They do not foam much, seem to clean the crud out quite well and do not leave residue after flushing. I am sure...
Different ways to get to the top of the mountain [emoji3552].
I usually pop the lower radiator hose off to drain. Then refill with water and add one "Cascade" tablet.
Run until thermostat opens, then some more. Let cool a bit. Pop lower radiator hose and drain.
Pop radiator hose back on...
I believe that the LDS initially had the single hole injectors before they switched to the two hole injectors, identical to the LDT, for cleaner combustion. I can attest from running both sets in the same LDS engine that the smokey single holers provide more "seat-of-the-pants" power. Both sets...
There is some agreement/disagreement over what makes an LDS vs an LDT. The intake rockers are definitely a difference; I do not think there is a contest.
The IP/HH may be different but an LDT with the LDS rockers and the fuel turned up will make LDS power.
When I redid my LDS I looked closely...
Hairline cracks on the heads are normal to an extent, especially if the heads are older and are not from the last castings in the late 1980' . The TM specifically mentions that the cracks within specs do not make a head unserviceable.

I did LDS swap mine and agree with most that was said.
"I would pull the heads off the good takeout LDS...." like you said was exactly how my totally unplanned rebuild of a good running takeout engine started.
I just wanted to do the head gaskets. Not because they were blown, but they were...
Yes, the heads do have freeze plugs. The TM will tell you more, and so will this post https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/all-this-for-a-freeze-plug.11295/post-107206
The short-and-not-so-sweet is that you need to pull the head(s) to do the end plugs. Hopefully it is just a hose as mentioned...
LOL on the cr2032! I went through that the other day. You would THINK that they are easy to get - but, nope....wasted two hours before getting the only thing I could find, a pack of 5. Great. I have 4 spares.
I am no electric chicken but I think the reason for hooking to a chassis ground and...
What @Mullaney said! When I rebuilt my LDS I went through a few sheets of FelPro gasket material and I was cutting my own gaskets for the first time. I actually like doing it and have been cutting my own off and on ever since. There are videos (of course) to watch on YouTube (of course) with a...
