Speddmon,
Thanks for the quick response! You may very well have nailed the problem in your assessment. I thought about spikes on the DC causing exactly what is happening, but dismissed it as unlikely on such a relatively simple machine. The DC generator on an 003A puts out only about 6 amps...
Hello all you MEP-002, 003 experts,
I have experienced several fuel pump failures on MEP-003A generators, and I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience. The fuel pumps I am talking about are the low pressure 24 Volt oscillating piston pumps, located below the control box, that suck...
Congratulations Bosko:beer:,
If you were able to diagnose the "no head gasket" problem, switch the head from one genny to another and get it running as shown in the video, you obviously know more than a little about how to use a wrench and are already well on your way to MEP addiction. You're...
dstang97,
There's discussion of this same vibration problem in this thread. Maybe something there will give you some ideas. Seems to be a common problem with no sure cure.
Richard
Ken,
I am far from a diesel engine expert so don't rely on my opinion too much. I tend to agree with one of the possibilities brought up by ETN550, that there is a restriction in the air supply such as something caught in the inlet manifold or air filter. That COULD explain much of what is...
Hello Bosko and welcome to the site. We can always use another MEP addict.
I don't want to discourage you in your early stages of addiction, but I will suggest that you will have a much smoother introduction to MEP-itis if you wait till your other MEP-002a arrives so you can compare it to the...
Hello, Richard. Welcome from Austin. You will find lots of company and help with your potential new addiction in both Texas and Oklahoma, although that covers a lot of territory and long distances. But it's not always necessary to meet face-to-face to get help. This site is a fantastic...
Stan,
Congratulations on your successful completion of a complex job!!:D Your "do it right" approach, and your "do it right" mechanical abilities have apparently paid off big time and are a lesson to us all. You now have a genset that is good as new, reliable and long-lasting.
In thinking...
LuckyDog,
Yes, now that you have pointed it out, it's obvious even to me that the items in KT85166 are clearly indicated in the parts drawings. :-o Thanks for taking the time to make the list!!
Don't know what the extra copper washer could be. The only parts that look sort of like that item...
Harley,
A one-paragraph explanation of how the voltage regulator works can be found in Section 6-3 of TM 5-6115-584-34. Nobody I know has been able to translate that paragraph (or any of the rest of the TM) into useful information for diagnosing VR failures and knowing which part of the VR may...
Harleyd315,
Sorry, but I haven't had time to dig into my shaking MEP-002A any further yet, but I have thought about it some. I am convinced that the shaking isn't caused by imbalance in the blower wheel or one of the cylinders working harder than the other. And since the shaking is most...
Harleyd315,
I agree with coyote62ny. Your high voltage problem is due to a failed voltage regulator board. The usual symptom of failure of the VR board is high voltage (you might expect it to be low voltage, but it's not). Tom at Gulf Coast will get you going again, but you could probably...
LuckyDog,
Did the very nice lady at AMBAC tell you what parts are included in the KT85166 Rebuild Kit? As I mentioned above, I didn't replace anything except the broken plunger guide, although the o-rings and a few other bits probably ought to have been replaced per normal procedure. I just...
Jerry,
As far as I know, the only way to time one of these engines is by reference to the PC mark on the flywheel, or the PC angle of rotation of the engine. If you cannot see the PC mark on the flywheel, you can find where the PC mark is supposed to be by following the procedure in Section...
LuckyDog,
You can get Plunger Guides and other parts directly from AMBAC, and almost surely less expensively than anywhere else (but still not cheap). The manuals are on their website:

Clint,
Welcome from Austin, just up the road from you. There are an astonishing number of SS members in the neighborhood, more than you would ever expect.
Richard
Stan,
Well, I have to admit that I am impressed both with your mechanical abilities and your progress in getting your genset back together. Lesser folks would have thrown in the towel long ago, but you are within sight of the goal and about to cross the finish line! Even the PC timing...
Bob,
Great! Glad you got it dialed in. I think this problem is very common but hard to track down because it usually occurs only at startup and isn't very repeatable. I don't think there is any mention of it in the TMs. But it's easy to fix once you see what's going on.
Regards,
Richard
RJM27,
I think you mean that the governor linkage (not the solenoid) is getting caught where it passes through the sheet metal opening next to the solenoid. When the governor linkage gets hung up, the governor is unable to unable to open the throttle all the way for startup. Most common...
