Helpful info. I bought a "ready-made" version at the Papago MV Show auction in Phoenix last month. It's a sealed box with both military and civie covered female recepticles installed. It allows hooking up a military trailer to a civie truck - or the other way around, using just the standard...
My Gama Goat weighed in at 7420 pounds at a public scales, when I first brought it into CA from AZ (I unbolted and unloaded everything unessential, swapped in little civie batteries, and burned off most of the fuel before weighing it).
Because it has 3 axles, I have to pay a weight fee each...
I've restored a number of vehicles over the years - and have seen the same kind of reaction of plastic to ammonia-based cleaners several times. One incident in particular stands out in my memory. I was cleaning up a nearly-mint low-milage Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 to sell, and decided to clean the...
The "Hawker's" do tend to run a little low on voltage - we have been running that type of battery for military programs at work for years, and the spiral construction is a fairly robust design. I still have some of the old Gates models (from the company that licensed the patent to Hawker...
I didn't get one either - I wonder if the "old vehicles exempt" law cancels out the new diesel smoke law?
BTW - My Detroit in kept in good tune - but it IS after all, a 2-stroke diesel. It smokes.
AM General claims their A2 Series electrical system on the HMMWV is completely waterproof. Aside from that - if you've rebuilt a newer-style alternator, you will have noted that both the rectifier pack and the regulator module are completely potted for water and dust resistance. Fresh water...
There are techniques for de-sulfating a battery that has been left to sit uncharged for too long - but there is a limit to the amount of lead sulfite that can be pulsed off the plates and put back into solution. In general, if there is a bulge under the positive terminal, or a very noticable...
The gasoline-fired 28V vehicle and shelter heater kits are almost a glut on the market - but the diesel ones have seemed pretty pricey. I hadn't realized they had gotten up above $500 though! I think maybe the more recent trend towards restoring deuces and 5T trucks has driven the market "north".
I'm no expert on CUCV suspension - I guess my closest vehicle to a CUCV is a "C-CUCV" - a purely civilian model. But hitting speedbumps at 40-50 MPH seems a little bit much to ask from a basically civie suspension. That said - death wobble is usually the result of either a loose part in the...
I'm not sure what it may be worth in your area - but when you do advertise it, you might want to note that it is a "road transport" type exhaust system. This type of exhaust was used to reduce the noise and side-exit exhaust smoke for over-the-road use, but prevents the Goat from swimming...
They are Gama Goat tractor seat bottom cushions. The same part fits the driver and passenger seat. Please let me know on this board, or by PM if you are planning to sell them.
I was also stationed in Germany - from 1973-1975. During the part of my time when I was stationed at Hanau, there were piles of M151's fresh back from 'Nam waiting to be de-milled (cut in half) for sale as scrap. The M151's had by then already suffered the indignity of having gained a bad...
That rig was originally built by W.M. out in Yucca Valley - and it's actually much faster, quieter, and more roadable than a stock Goat - though the price mentioned seems pretty steep to me. Don't know if W***** is the one selling it, or if it is being sold by someone that bought it from him...
RE: mount
I saw these listed in M.V. Magazine this month. There's not really too much to the M60 MG base on the Goat - a rectangular pad with a tube welded onto it. I can post dimensions if anyone is interested. The ammo can rack that bolts onto the carrier fender is a little more involved -...
I haven't ever seen one in a Gama Goat - but we use them in our Scorpion rock crawlers, and at 130HP, and over 400 foot-pounds of torque at 1200 RPM, how could you go wrong? Vibration at idle will likely be as high as the 353 Detroit - but expect a big decrease in noise if you switch to the...
$500 sounds fair for a new hardtop - but I'd like to warn anyone planning to run one, that the sound level just gets higher with the hardtop! The soft doors show up on eBay almost every month - but it seems that they are selling individual door parts now, rather than the whole kit that used to...
The M135 (G749 family) was built between 50-55 to replace the WWII CCKW 2 ½ ton trucks. They were succeeded by the M35 (G743 family) later in the 50s, after the Korean War. So…even though there were some M35s and M135s (and maybe even a few CCKWs) in service at the same time – the 135 is the...
I don't recollect too much about operation of the M35 - since I haven't operated one (or an M53/M54 model) since I got out of the Army in the early 70's - but does the engine kill with a cable pull like my Goat does? I had the same kind of cold start problem, before I read through my operator's...
RE: help
Testing for voltage with a DVM (or even a good analog meter) won't necessarily spot a loose or corroded connection. The voltmeter draws only microamps - so it will show voltage if there is any connection at all - no matter how poor - as long as the circuit is unloaded. My guess is that...
