    Question about trailer brakes

I hear you; I can buy a lot of wheel chocks for the extra hundred and sixty bucks it costs to get the brakes w/parking feature. My OPINION of surge brakes and a lunette coupler for off road use is pretty low. I find that the normal play in that style hitch combined with rough terrain makes...

    Question about trailer brakes

I would download a copy of the tech pub and follow the maintenance procedure. The surge coupler is just a simple pressure actuated master cylinder. If it pumps fluid while being operated and doesn't leak, I would call it good to go. The surge actuator that I had on mine was an OD green...

    Question about trailer brakes

Those particular brakes aren't the "same" but they should bolt right on. (at least they will on the A2 trailer I had.) If you have a five bolt brake flange and 12x2 drums they will work. The cheaper marine style you are looking at are single servo, free backing w/o parking brake. The will...

The larger ones were on the front.

    Question about trailer brakes

converting to electric requires a new axle, the breakaway switch and a breakaway battery. Keeping the hydraulics would be cheaper/easier assuming that your drums and surge coupler are serviceable. If you are willing to give up the parking brake feature, you can get brand new complete ready to...

    Tie down anchors

Well, on mine the fronts were 4" with a threaded bolt pin. The rears are 2 3/4 or so and use a cotter or hitch pin to retain the shackle pin.

    Tie down anchors

How 'bout these, Nick? Weld on Flat Face Clevis Mounts :: Bumper Fabrication Components :: DIY Fabrication Builder Parts :: AtoZ Fabrication I have one pair each of front and rear shackles that I am not using. We could probably make a good deal for whichever set you might want.

    M101 A2 & A3 Axle/Spindle Question

ordering a custom trailer axle is easy. They need to know what weight range axle you want, the hub face to hub face measurement, and what the spring center distance is. You can order them bare, with brakes, etc. I am pretty sure that the factory A2 axle was 62" hub face and 43.25" spring...

    M101 A2 & A3 Axle/Spindle Question

I went through this exact situation. Still working on it actually. You can physically install standard 12x2 electric trailer brakes on an A2 axle, but the GI surge brake drums won't work with electric brakes - no magnet surface. If you assemble it that way, the raised lug stud mounting area...

It was in jest...I don't hate it up here THAT much.

    M101 Trailer

While I do not wish to disparage this cute little state in a public forum, suffice it to say that I am anxious for my final obligation to this nation to be over in 2012 and make a beeline to where my Lone Star State license plates will no longer be lonely.

Hey, Hey now. It's Maryland that I am currently exiled to - don't put me any farther north than I am right now!! Three more years......

    Is this a M105a3 trailer

hmmm..... that's pretty sweet. What is the lug pattern? The hubs sort of look like a dually arrangement. It looks like the best features of the M101A2 (surge brakes) and M105 (large cargo box and ultra beefy spring) combined.

    Towing a M105a2 w/ civilian Pick Up ?

I suppose that the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't mess with it" applies. Out of curiosity, have you ever had it weighed?

    Towing a M105a2 w/ civilian Pick Up ?

I've admired those photos more than a few times while gathering web information on mil trailers. Nice job. Every time I see your trailer, this is my thought: Have you considered removing the overloads and some of the leafs in the main pack? The M105 spring set up with just the main leaf...

    Pic request, M101

Here are the photos as requested. With new six leaf springs installed, I have about 4 1/2" clearance to the frame with no weight on the suspension. I don't really expect the suspension to squat very much at all with the entire trailer weight on it. All I did for the perch was to simply trim...

    Pic request, M101

The frame to axle clearance is definitely a concern when trying this. I started working on mine this evening and have some preliminary measurements. I started with 6" clearance from the top of the leaf to the frame, similar to yours. The NOS pair of springs recently purchased from Saturn...

    Pic request, M101

I am doing a spring under on my m101A2 shortly. If I am measuring correctly, it should net 6" of drop. The lower shock/u-bolt plate just requires a little grinder therapy to become an axle mount pad.

    Trailer lighting

You're very welcome. I like your trailer by the way, your album has been inspirational with my M101A2 project. Those round vintage style tail lights look good; I think I will do the same thing with mine. I also just saw some FMVSS approved 3/4" round LED marker lights. They are very slick...

    M101 Pulling Vehicle

I have a M101A2 with the surge brakes. One thing to be aware of is pintle/lunette fit. The trailer ring is much larger than the 2" ball/pintle combo that I have. It can't be towed lke this with surge brakes; the sloppy interconnection creates a big problem. The trailer basically oscillates...
