900 is pretty steep for brakes. For that money you could have gotten an new axle with electric brakes. For a time I was considering (and still may) replacing my axle with a Dexter 7K 4" drop with electric brakes. I was quoted $550 for the parts.
If I do get a tongue box, I think it will have to be a DIY job like yours because it needs to be thin. I like being able to pivot the trailer completely out of the way of the tailgate while its attached to the truck.
A nice surprise has been how well the trailer pulls with the 2.5" ring. Just...
Thanks Harley, like many before me, your build was used as a template. I still have a pretty long list of things I would like to do but at least it is functional as it sits. Now that I have a welder, I am re-thinking some of my plans.
Once I figure out what to do with all of the take off...
It is rolling !
Wheel spacers arrived.
Seems like everyone was pretty proud of their used tires in my area so I decided to give the Dextero brand a try from Walmart. Picked 225/75/16 for a 29.5" overall tire height. These actually seem like pretty decent tires for $111 each. They are all...
Took another step forward with this project today.....
Also got the hubs back together and am waiting on some 1/4" spacers.
Cleaned and painted the new wheels.
When attempting to dry fit the new wheels, it became apparent that all 8x6.5 lugs/ lug nuts are not equal. The lug nuts...
You can remove the hydraulic surge brake system and keep the parking brakes. I was actually going to do this on my build but decided to shave some more wight and ditch the brakes and drums.
This project is a good excuse to finally buy a welder. I doubt this will be the last trailer I want to do this work on....
gimpyrobb, you win the creepiest avatar award :)
Haven't done much other than complete the wiring for the lights and remove the entire brake system. Got tired of being quoted $200 for the welding work so I am taking a break to buy a welder and learn to weld. Hope to have this all wrapped up by the end of April
Thank you. I am still trying to decide what to do.
I did decide to remove the brakes. Once I remove the two screws that hold the drum onto the hub, do I need to a press to separated the two parts? I have three screws out so far, one is partially stripped.
Have not listed the parts yet. I will probably wait until I am done then list all of the left over parts at the same time.
Another newbie question:
Are the spindle dimensions on the the M101A3 axles common (commercially) or are they special to these trailers? I ask because it seems like I...
Good point on not needing the spacers. I will see how things fit up once the channel is welded on.
Received the parts from Croft today. They ship fast!
The parts are inverted. I plan to leave one hole of the channel about the frame for a good weld. That will leave 5" of contact with the...
