New Here Looking to Learn About Urals

Back in the 1990s when the first surplus Ural-375 hit the civilian market in USSR they were called "death to private entrepreneur". The fuel consumption of the gasoline powered ones was so atrocious, it made it impossible to justify running a Ural-375. The gassers were made from 1961 to 1981...

    Test driving & buying a Russian T-72

Bring a knowledgeable local that's on your side. You gotta be careful with T-72s, the engines are muti-fuel and if they were ever used on something other than diesel, the fuel pump and injectors are likely shot. Check the filters for wear products. If they are recently replaced and squeaky...

    Motorcycle - unknown type

The bike in the pic looks like a Ural with either 650cc or 720cc engine. If you found one in the Sandbox, it could be a 720cc which was never exported to US. The old 650/720cc engines aren't all that reliable, the 750cc engines are better. An old airhead BMW will fit this bike, when equipped...

UAZ 469 parts and parts source needed in Iraq

Which diesel engine is it (VM/Fiat, Peugot or?) and what year is the vehicle? I have only seen gas engines in UAZ in Russian service. If you post a photo or lift a part number, I'll ask people in Russia look it up and tell you the source for it. If the clutch master cylinder the same as that on...

    Russian Bikes

Unfortunately, despite my name, I don't speak Finnish. My grandfather was from Karjala, and he spoke it quite well. Unfortunately he did not teach any of his children so the grandchildren had nobody to learn from. He was an amazing guy and an great outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. One fine...

    Russian Bikes

The slowness can be cured by swapping the original powerplant for a pre-1979 (or pre-1980) R90 or R100 BMW engine. The Ural 4 speed trans can be modified to fit, everything else remains stock. Don't try to bold a BMW engine and trans to a ural - you will end up with 5 reverse gears and 1...

Couple of Russian trucks earning their keep. (Nail Biter!)

Basic Ural-4320 with Kamaz-740 engine is rated to haul 5 ton off-road. There are variants with Yamz-236 and Yamz-238 engines (dump trucks, log haulers, steel pipe haulers, etc.) that have much higher rating. Off the top of my head - 7 and 12 tons. In reality, even basic 4320 is capable of more...

Anyone thought about Isuzu 6HK1-TC with Allision 3000?

new diesel smog laws in california

I am confused, does this new law mean that it is impossible to register a diesel MV (M35, M54, etc.) in CA, unless it qualifies for an exception as "historical" or "motorhome"? Does it also mean that such vehicles that were previously registered are no longer legal to operate? I am assuming that...

    Opposed Piston/Opposed Cylinder 2-stroke engines

Russians used these in their tanks T-64 was equipped with 5TDF engines T-80UD was equipped with 6TDF These engines required more careful maintenance when compared to Russian V12 diesels (T-55, T-62, T-72). The early 5TD series engines required to be fully heated up prior to driving. This...

BRDM-2 has GAZ-41 engine. The fuel pump rebuild kit is the same as B9 kit used on Gaz-66.

Couple of Russian trucks earning their keep. (Nail Biter!)

Zil-133 is the longnose diesel version, the truck in the second vid is a beat up Zil-131, with a gas v8. The Urals looked like either 375D or 4320. Generally speaking the Zil-131 is ill suited for a logging truck. The Ural-375D is powered by a bigger gasoline V8 engine (Zil-375Ya). These guys...

    Russian Bikes

I used to own a Ural sidecar rig a couple of years back. The newer 750cc ones are much better than the old 650cc ones. If you are interested in buying one - call Ski from Triquest motorcycles in Santa Clara,CA - he'll tell you all about it. He usually has a few in his showroom. My experience...

    Anyone here have a T-72 or 55/54/60????

I am 6 ft tall and I used to be 170 lbs. Did I fit in a T-72 driver's compartment? Yes. Was I comfortable there - **** no. I had to do it on occasion, generally I would take the commander's seat. Sorry if I am not using proper English terminology, I don't know it.
