I'm getting help on this project from two mechanic friends of mine, one who worked on CUCVs in the military and works on trucks/cars/motorcycles every day, and my other buddy has worked on cars/trucks, especially Chevys, all his life. He works at a hydraulic shop, but does a lot of diesel/motor...
My buddy's got a few at his shop and he's pretty straight with a drill, gonna get at that next week when he's available again and the weather clears up. He agreed though that a left handed bit should do the trick, thanks.
I appreciate it - I'll be placing an order with you guys today. I know it won't be brand new, but refurbished in good condition, all in tact, is a LOT better starting point than where I'm at with it now.
I'm gonna assume John is the guy who runs the HillbillyWizard site? You think I should try it? I agree, if I got the truck towed to a shop to take a look at and fix the wiring they'd probably charge me a couple grand haha
Edit: the harness is $299 I just looked again, still seems like a really...
Hey guys,
Got under the hood today dealing with my starter problem... for any of y'all following the start of my struggles, the second starter bolt was snapped off.
Anyway, I finally got it in the garage and got a good look at it. I found a lot of melted wiring, hot wires stripped down to bare...
Appreciate the advice man, thanks. Hopefully going to get back at this project when I get off work, so I should have an update by tomorrow. Hopefully I can get the old girl to crank and start again, that'd make me happy.
10-4. I will get back under the truck today and see if I'm missing a bolt or if it's broken. There was definitely an additional hole next to the one bolt I found on the bottom. Sounds like my friend was right... (not that I'm ever going to admit that rofl) If that bolt is broken up in there I...
That's what my buddy and I are going back and forth about. He is swearing to me that there should be two bolts in the bottom of the starter, I only saw one (yes I did see a hole where a second could potentially go, but this is an aftermarket 12V starter, I'm not sure if the second bolt would...
10-4 man. I'll look up the part number and see if I can get a replacement. In the meantime I'll straighten her out check the torque on the back bolt and see if I can get her to crank over.
I didn't see a bracket up towards the front. You're talking about the one that goes up against the block? The starter isn't original, it's the 12V model, I don't know if that should make a difference but I didn't see any bracket when I was under there yesterday. I saw it on the TM diagram that I...
Hey guys,
Finally getting my bearings with using the forums!
Here's the situation: I could get my truck to crank and fire up all the way until last weekend. Now it just makes a free spinning whirring sound.
Details: Turn the key to battery on, hold the glow plug button in for about 5 seconds...
Yep, I found the list of TMs you're talking about. Guess I just gotta figure out which one talks about engine bay wiring haha. I will probably keep a list, I've already got a running list of things that need doing on her.
Got new injectors and glowplugs, a new 24V starter. As much as I want to...
Yessir glow plugs and everything work fine. I think the harness is original, only thing he added was some aftermarket LED blocks on the front grille guard for better night visibility.
I could get it to crank and start until last weekend, seems like the starter he put in died. Took the...
Hey y'all. Proud new owner of an '86 M1008. Trying to get her running reliably by July. The previous owner converted it to 12V after it caught on fire at the passenger side wiring block. Said he had alternator work done and a 12V starter put in. I want it back to 24V.
I don't know these trucks...
