Now that my brakes work on the farm fresh M1009, time to address the power issue.
I've noticed that going up hills in the area gets difficult at highway speeds (65mph)
Pedal to the floor, unloaded, the M1009 will top out at 53mph going up inclines like
she's towing an 18-wheeler.
* New fuel...
A follow up... The master cylinder was *definitely* the cause. After bench bleeding and replacing I noticed an immediate huge improvement. All brake warning lights went off immediately.
I replaced the caliper bleeders with Russell speed bleeders... best thing i've ever done. Saved hours messing...
I small note on the oil cooler lines, i noticed they are coated in oil on my "sitting a while" M1009. So much so the power steering lines were coated as well. Overzealous TX Saftey Inspector told me my power steering lines were leaking and had to be fixed... think i'm going with the powerwasher...
Around 20 minutes from Blanco, TX. We're building up a ~7.3 acre lot.
Yeah, I guess if I'm going to bleed again anyway, might as well swap the master. Didn't realize they run only like 30 bucks.
For some history, here is the unholy mess i received it in. I was making a guess about someone mixing DOT 3 + 5 since it looks such a mess with "globs" in the rear reservoir.
Yeah, I haven't been reusing the fluid since I want to make sure all the DOT 5 is gone. (but, at this point i'll likely start using the removed fluid)
Cheapo hand pump one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Vacuum-Tester-Bleeder-Automotive-Adapters/dp/B073CNGMRG
The cheapo hand pump's lines are...
Heh, I've run *almost* 48 oz of off-brand Dot 4 through them now over a few hours with a cheapo hand pump... running out of containers to store brake fluid in :-)
So, ever increasing drama.
1) Got CUCV, had a (recently created) sludge mix of DOT 3 + DOT 5 in it (brakes semi functional)
2) Completely flushed out brakes with DOT 4 (availability + price thing)
3) Changed old rubber brake lines on front + suction bleed w/Teflon tape on bleeder screw. No...
Thanks for the breakdown! I haven't had much experience with older trucks, and figured a rundown from here would be helpful :-).
She came from the base in San Antonio (Radio Truck). Was used as a farm/hauling truck by a relative for the last decade or two. The family member loves her so I'm...
I've been slowly getting the M1009 back to life. After getting her caught back up on maintenance, and replacing the rotting rubber brake lines, pumping out all the crud, I feel like she's safe to drive.
I had a few minutes waiting around for a burn pile to simmer down. Some underside pictures...
I can say after having the DOT 3 flushed into it:
1. Pedal travel is a *lot* less and a lot more precise.
2. Braking performance is a lot more even and consistent. (that may be just becuse of the horrible DOT 3 + 5 mix I had before though)
3. The Brake warning light came on and I haven't...
Correct. :-) Decided to keep the rubber and just order a new set.
Anyone have any thoughts about converting from DOT 5 to DOT 5.1?
I know about all the issues mixing DOT 5 with "DOT 3/4/5.1", but figured while I was replacing the rotten rubber
lines it might be a good time since the closest...
Eh. The confusion comes in when you look at the options.
This is the M1008 radio truck which i've always thought was closer to the 1986 Blazer K5.
The K5 and the K-10 take two different front brake lines.
EDIT: This is the M1009 I assume. Which means just stick to Chevy Blazer K5 parts?
M1009 brake lines
Anyone know a the part numbers for a good replacement set of rubber or SS brake lines for the 1986 M1009?
I know mine are getting close to failure (original) and want to get them fixed before I'm stuck on the side of the road somewhere.
