What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

A new warning label so I don't over shoot anyone by a week and a half ;)😁 My truck wouldn't look good in plaid.

Spicer 6853-B Alternative to the 6453

Yes, you can. The mainshaft and countershaft are common to both. However, The drive gear ratio is different between the two. So, I did the math and just replacing the third gears widens the hole between 2nd and 3rd to around 78%.

Spicer 6853-B Alternative to the 6453

Thanks for your reply. The sale I have my eye on said the tranny came from a 1979 International S1900. In what capacity (bobtail box, dumptruck, tractor), its not stated. We have several decent grades out here and I've had to take them all in 4th high, one in third. So, I should be OK there...

Spicer 6853-B Alternative to the 6453

I have mulled over the alternatives for replacement transmissions, i.e. 6, 7, 8, 9 or even 10 speed, for my M818, but have run into issues including over length, over width and PTO incompatibility. Some of these problem may be cured, but only after major modification to the drive train. So, I...

Need help with the evolution of 5 ton trucks.

I converted an M809-series truck to straight air brakes ridding myself of the questionable air-hydraulic brakes. M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

Correct. Going to outboard drums was a project in and of itself.

M54A2 converted to M939 from air brakes

The M39/M809-series and M939/M939A1-series hubs are dissimilar. The latter are narrower on the spindle housing.

M54A2 converted to M939 from air brakes

I did it on an M818 with drums, hubs, spiders, and shoes from an M931A1. https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/m809-series-m818-air-brake-retrofit.140055/page-3 Start with post #55.

Front axle front companion flange leak, M809-series

I just finished my second replacement of the oil seal on my M818's front axle's front companion flange. However, I am still getting a leak during longer trips when the axle warms up and gear oil flows easier. The leak originates behind the companion flange deflector, obviously from the seal...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

You would have to go up to 16.5 x 7 s-cams. All the M939-series trucks are 15" diameter. Seeing how the the same spider for the wedge brakes is used across all incarnations of the M939-series and the M809 and the M939A1/A2 axles are the same, then the spiders, s-cam brackets, s-cams and chambers...

I think the Air Force wins the biggest truck award...

I found this Boeing document. It goes into detail on how the truck was operated with some "propeller head" info too. It was not a launching vehicle. It provided transportation and emplacement into launching structures.
