    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

I found the correct dust shields that fit the particular spiders I used. I was going to annotate the p/n to the list I posted a while back, but it won't edit anymore. So here it is... Dust Shields, Pair Meritor A13236Q2123 I have also obtained a PP7 trailer supply valve and a TP3 tractor...

Is this Normal? M818 crashing noise in reverse.

M809-series trucks (including the M818 ) may go in reverse in low range transfer. It's the M939-series which have complications in low range reverse. Do a transfer case flush and see if it clears up the issue. Here's a couple threads pointing you in that direction...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

On Saturday, Aug. 15, I went to a car show with my Dad and his '30 Ford Model A benefiting the Semper Fi Fund. It was out in Downey, CA at a cool retro Bob's Big Boy coffee shop/drive in. It was nice HOT 95+º day. This was the longest road trip since installing full air brakes on the truck. All...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

Well, I'm going to call this project complete. Last Saturday I installed the front brake chamber hoses, but without the full spring guard. I took it on drive down to a nearby self service car wash. These brakes on this truck are a dream compared to the old air-hydraulic. I have to get used to...

    5 ton lockout hubs

Remove the air routed through the transmission twin poppet valve to the sprag declutching cylinder and the sprag will default to neutral. The front shaft will then be disconnected from both the transfer case and the axle. I believe there was an MWO applied to some M809-series trucks that...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

I plan to finish up tomorrow and call the job "complete" making the truck full mission capable. I will install the hoses from the frame to the front air chambers. But, there will be some small additions beyond that. I do have on order some hose spring guard to add a little more protection in...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

Yesterday, I finished the plumbing to the air dryer. As I posted before, I used 1/2" braided steel teflon hosed, two 10AN 90º swivel fittings and two 10AN to 1/2" NPT adapters for the discharge line. I used a 1/2" NPT hex coupling attached to the nipple already on the air compressor to attach...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

With the axle caps on, king pins greased and brake dust/cover plates installed, the front tires went back on this morning. I properly torqued the lug nuts and axle cap nuts. A word about the cover plates...bolt them onto the spider before you install them on the knuckle. The bottom most...

Almost forgot to add, I installed, properly torqued (preloading the bearings) the spindle nuts and washers. I concluded with bolting on the front axle caps with new gaskets all this afternoon after work.

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

I do not know the brand of grease off hand, but I ordered it from McMaster-Carr. I can get the brand name later today after work. Here's a link if you want to order some... http://www.mcmaster.com/#1295k63/=y8h8cd All the internal parts, wedges, plungers, ratchet pawls, etc., to include the...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

This morning I greased and installed the front axle shafts. I installed the spindles with a bead of ultra black gasket maker, the brake spiders and bolted it all down. Don't forget the the deflector ring over the spiders before the nuts go on.... I indexed the air chambers with ports...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Draining the crankcase is a snap! BUT, even with a spin-on filter, that part is still messy.
