    Storing TowBar

I finally settled on under bed storage for my towbar since putting on the new dropside bed last August. I used a shackle mount bolted to the bed under the floor with a 1/4" steel backing plate in the bed for strength. A grade 5 7/8"-9 X 10" bolt with nut and washer secure it to the shackle mount...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Tow bar storage/shifter handle And now back to our regularly scheduled program...with pictures, even! I finally settled on under bed storage for my towbar since putting on the new dropside bed last August. I used a shackle mount bolted to the bed under the floor with a 1/4" steel backing plate...

    Wheel chocks?

I chock the M818 as a rule of thumb no matter what. I don't have the springs brakes to fall back and I don't leave the main in gear. That drum brake on the rear drive shaft is iffy at best. Last year at a car show my son was showing the cab to another child. Well, that child inadvertantly...

    M923A2 Doing 80 MPH!!

My 818 averages 53 on 11R20's...55 down hill with a tail wind. I couldn't imagine that beast going faster. Not in a hurry here. I tell folks, "I don't get anywhere fast, but I look darn good gettin' there!" ;)

    XM818 a semi failed recovery

Wow! Delectable [thumbzup] Doesn't look worthy of a rebuild. Too much corrosion.

I believe that may be propositioned with highly refrigerated brewed beverages that are frequently available in mass quantities ;)

    Brother WillWagner

Ah! BUT, alas, we assembled every hand-operated metallic implement in all this fair land! BUT, it 'tis I...I, who neglected to record, in wondrous digital light, this occasion for posterity for lack of a photographic device! For this, I shall bear the shame ;) No, really, to much greasy...

    Brother WillWagner

Just posting up a shout out to our resident Cummins diesel all knowing Dr. and guru, WillWagner. Brother Will came out to my neck of the woods on a Saturday morning recently and helped me with a leaky rocker box issue. He has also helped me out in the past with other engine and parts obtaining...

    XM818 a semi failed recovery

Do they have the transfer case cylinder kits? The problem can manifest there also.

    XM818 a semi failed recovery

For the poppet valves complete, I have sent you some eBay links via PM.

    XM818 a semi failed recovery

The rebuild kits are not and, I don't believe, have ever been on the website. When I call Memphis, I always talk to the parts guys directly. They have always been very courteous and knowledgeable and always seem to have what I was looking for.

    XM818 a semi failed recovery

The problem is most likely with the poppet valve. Either rebuild or replace the valve. While you're at it rebuild the sprag declutching cylinder. Both rebuild kits are available through Memphis Eq. I replaced the poppet valve and rebuilt the cylinder. When all is working you'll be able to hear...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

With the assistance of our resident Cummins guru, Brother WillWagner, we changed out some crappy rocker box gaskets (the #3 was leaking down the back of the block) for the good stuff, new fuel jumper o-rings, new rocker shaft o-rings and, topping it all off, some new rocker box cover gaskets...

Oil Stains on CARC, how to remove?

Leave it. It adds character ;)

Air horns to replace stock ones

Get yourself one of these, a Nathan P3, or similar. And activated through one of these, a Graham-White metering valve. Almost turns the horn into a musical instrument ;) The whole set up is plumbed with 1/2" DOT nylon air brake tubing and push-to-connect fittings. It's connected to the dry...

    XM818 a semi failed recovery

That's a Nathan P3 in my truck. Reminds me of the Southern Pacific. I can blow a 'grade crossing' and the needle won't even budge. I did add an additional 8.5 gal. tank behind the cab for more air volume. The tank helps with air tools also. [thumbzup][thumbzup]

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Fixed a bothersome leaking PTO access cover with a custom PPE machined aluminum cover and some RTV Ultra Black. AND then, pumped ALL the oil back in...AGAIN...Oh, after the gasket cured. I finished up the frame tie-downs install. Then only did I realize there are two more (one each side) right...
