    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

Moving the pump down to the chassis certainly has it's advantages. On ebay there is a company that is selling parts from excavators and they have a bunch of hydraulic swivels for cheap. For those kinds of prices (average of about $300 each) it just makes sense to do the conversion. Many of those...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Used to have one of the 'smooth side' version of those boxes in my pickup. Great size and pretty well organized box.

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

Going off the pic it must be for the rear winch. The 2 hoses that are the same size are headed towards it. Large hose is going from the tank to the pump, then other hose is the high pressure from pump. Doesn't need to be a 3 port but they did it.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Will be awhile before I mess with it. Gotta finish the airbrake conversion, detroit locker, dog bones, hydraulic kit, tool/welding m103 trailer, and setup the m51a2 remains as a trailer first. All things I have the parts for just haven't installed yet.

Seat on my m816 is in need of replacement but won't happen yet

    5 ton wrecker bed

The cable is the limit on the crane winch. 1/2" is the only choice because of the fluted drum, about 92-96ft of length. Setup for 3 part line it can safely lift 20k (boom retracted with support legs attached).

    5 ton wrecker bed

If it has 1" ID passages and rated for 3k psi with oil grab it. I just typed in "rotary manifold" and a bunch from excavators just popped up but don't know their passage sizes

    5 ton wrecker bed

Need 1 more passage going through the swivel for the airlines to do it properly. Pricetag on the swivels (that I've found) is about 1k per passage. That being said, could simplify the current hydraulic lines running to the swivel. It should only need 2 hydraulic lines running through it (1 low...

    5 ton wrecker bed

His scale weighed it at 17k and the numbers add up in the TM. 5 ton wreckers weigh 38k, 5 ton tractors weigh 21k. Lose the 5th wheel and other tractor components, add in the frame reinforcements and the 18" of extra frame length, the power divider, then the bed and get 38k for the wrecker...

Yep. Bed, crane, rear winch, manual outriggers, comes out to 17k

    5 ton wrecker bed

The military wrecker beds were designed back in the 40's, hydraulics early days where they couldn't get the high pressures so they used high volume to do the job. Some plumbing work to setup but should be ok. Higher flow rate from the pump would be better but worst case scenario the crane...

    5 ton wrecker bed

Yes the wrecker bed hydraulic pump is powered off the transfercase PTO (1:1 gearing). That's alot of valve banks to add haha. Individual component movements for each valve?

    5 ton wrecker bed

For that use the bed should be fine then. The crane can lift: 10k no support legs, boom retracted, outriggers down 20k with support legs, boom retracted (to the rear of the truck) 4k no support legs, full 18ft extension, outriggers down 3k no support legs, full extension, no outriggers Looking...

    5 ton wrecker bed

Mines different underneath. The m936 (yours) has the hydraulic pump located on the truck chassis, then pumps the fluid up through the hydraulic swivel to the crane/rear winch. The m816 (mine) uses 2 separate PTO shafts under the bed. One shaft goes to the rear winch. The other shaft goes to a...

    5 ton wrecker bed

Chances are the pump you currently have on the international won't be compatible with this beds' hydraulics. It's a old design, low pressure (max 2500 psi) high volume system. The rear winch is rated for 45k however with the hydraulic drive system on it it's only rated for 30k. The bed was...

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

Sounds good. I think for me in the long run it will be cheaper to stay with a modified PTO setup for the crane. The idea of a second wrecker bed modified to be a excavator sounds very useful for me and with my plans to have the bed removable on this truck that will work out well. Find a non...
