My only thought would be that the selection of devices (lights, audio, etc...) would be far greater and less expensive in 12 volt.
And... Although what you said is true, 12 volt systems have been around long time, I'd think your equalizer would overcome any 12 v weaknesses with the alternator...
I agree on the size being an important factor in who/how it could be recovered, that's my worry as well. Kind of why I figured if I could get that last wheel training in an "emergency" situation, I would.
I guess the reliability of a locker is not something I calculated. A dodgy locker that...
I've been watching stuck videos. The majority of which are a lmtv in not even hub deep mud. Not dragging the axles, not buried up to the frame, not digging the bumper in. It just got squishy and the lmtv's massive weight cannot climb out of the rut due to the open diffs.
All that weight without...
Having owned something like 23 Jeeps and various Blazers, broncos, land cruisers/rovers over the years, I'm kind of opposed to wheeling anything with open diffs anymore.
Specifically with the lmtv I worry about crossing up the axles in a trench traverse, or deep mud or loose soil.
The shear...
Yeah, but we're close. A Detroit locker in the rear is not a problem, but locking the front axle requires a selectable for anyone who sees slippery winter conditions.
And I swear. I read in an old thread somewhere that someone was taking a bunch of the Detroit style lockers to a machine shop...
Well, that's encouraging. Thanks.
Also, the pump and PTO are fairly common COTS parts. Many, many commercial dump, roll-off, and other truck have an Allison Transmission and a PTO unit and pump bolted to it. Vanderhaags surely has a bunch of them for sale, I'd think.
Having done a bunch of axle swaps on much smaller trucks and Jeeps the thought of this is a bit daunting. I know nothing of the MK23.
There's a lot of maybes there.
Maybe:
if the axles are close in width
if the spring pads/suspension brackets are similar, or the old chopped off and new...
Yeah. The old WWII Jeeps had them, and they carried over into the civilian models for many years. the civvy ones were cheap trash, but I think the earlier military ones were some kind of spring steel, so they were tougher.
They were kind of handy. You could use them as a step, a hanger, a...
Sorry, I bought the one from @TacMac2012 a few weeks ago. I'm not sure I'll EVER get it installed as it's a huge task. I'm guessing a hundred or more man-hours to get the drum and tank mounted, then install all of the frame parts, including that heinous front cab mount with the rollers. A bunch...
The locker itself, probably. I'm pretty sure that's what they are doing with the Detroit units.
The question then becomes, which locker destroy in the attempt? and what about all of the lines, and fittings?
Does anyone know the application the Detroit locker design being used is from? What...
Finally got around to replacing mine. The Botton section of tubing was definitely weakened. Just in handling it, it managed to get a noticeable bend in it.
Those seals have me thinking.
It's a lot of time and expense to close the gap between the cargo bed and the cab, moving the spare, air filters, air/hydro etc.. something I'm not sure I have the will to do.
This was eluded to above, but I'm thinking out loud here. A guy might be able to make a...
It might be worth your effort to try another branch. I'm not sure where you are, but it might be worth "shopping around". I didn't have any issues getting my lmtv titled and registered. the biggest hassle was that I needed to have the sheriff come out and verify the serial number and check if it...
@Ronmar do you have a good source for the relays? Especially the 24v ones. I'd like to just replace them all, but the 24v ones I ordered from Amazon are physically too large in size.
yeah, I saw Helicool's vid. My first thought was that I'd probably beat up the thin metal he used and it'd look like crap in short order.
I like what you did with the flat aluminum.... I might have to give that a go.
