If you put the deuce in Low Range it is almost impossible to stall the engine out and it is easier to steer when creeping along while getting used to operating a large vehicle.
When I was a Drivers Training NCO and I had a newbie that had never driven a standard shift I always taught them to use...
If you haven't filled it with fresh fuel yet and you didn't drain it using the plug on the bottom of the tank you really should do it that way.
Pumping the tank out is not going to get all of the crud out.
Once you remove the plug (this may require a big pull bar and a cheater pipe) and drain...
Dying due to one's own stupidity is an act of Karma. It may not be fair (could have been a young person with the potential to turn his life around) but it happens every day.
I just saw a post on FB about two meth heads that broke into a police storage facility and stole ammunition and tactical...
This has been an on going problem with this engine since the trucks were fielded. I was in a unit that changed over from the 800 series truck straight to the cargo 900A2 series. At night in the Motor Pool you could hear the solenoids de-energizing with an audible "clicking" sound.

If you keep your foot off the firewall you can get 8MPG or better depending on terrain. Most of my deuces liked about 58 mph but I never had super singles. You can prob cruise at 62 or so and not be up against the governor.
I had an M54 tractor and it would not pull a greasy string out of a fat cat's a$$.
I'd get a M900 series and look at alternative fuels but you risk FUBARing the engine.
There are all kinds of plans out there for running straight veggie oil in diesels but again you risk destroying an expensive...
The M900 trucks with the 250 made a weird sound when going down the road. I never figured out exactly what caused it but it is common. If the knock increases and decreases under load then you may have a problem.
I would find an old school Cummins mechanic in your area and have him check it...
