The OP is physically far away from his truck when it's winterized. To me, this presents a conundrum.
- I have seen too many battery tenders fail in a destructive way. They either destroy the batteries by overcharging, failing to charge, or cause an electrical fire.
- Leaving the batteries...
I've already done one axle with civilian, generic boots. They definitely work, they just feel thinner and more flimsy than the correct part. While they are certainly better than driving around with a hole in the boot, they will probably tear the first time they are subjected to any kind of...
Yes, fairly easy. Remove the "doghouse" inside the cab and post a photo of the rear of the engine. The fuel pump has a particular orientation for the 6.2L and the 6.5L. They are different. That's the quick and easy way.
Also, I *think* that if the valve cover has a GEP label on it, it must be...
@Coug that was pretty good fuel economy for all the luggage that you're carrying. The dang things are only expected to get 12mpg unladen, I think.
I spent the weekend removing and painting the troop seats and other bits and bobs. Obviously the fresh, green paint isn't going to perfectly match...
Some Gillespie paint arrived today. I'll paint our tan troop seats green to match the rest of the truck and touch up a bunch of rusty bits.
My first time using this paint. We'll see what happens...
Yeah, you're one of the hardest working people I've ever seen, from what you post here. I agree on the humans. I'm not nearly as extroverted as I come across on the forums. I just really, really like information sharing, especially from experienced people. It helps me become self-sufficient...
Although these trucks could be considered "simple" by modern (and commercial) standards the fact is, these are large vehicles that have many systems and they are complex. Entropy is not our friend. It's a race to reverse and then get ahead of systems degradation. Then add in the sheer size and...
My truck sat for about 8 years before I bought it.
It may be too little, too late but I did a coolant flush and put in SCA shortly after I bought my truck. I used test strips before I performed the procedure and of course they indicated that the old coolant was "toast" but there was at least...
I have a sort of similar problem.
No leaks.
Excellent brakes.
When the fluid is cold, the steering is perfect at all RPMs. When the engine heats up and all the fluids heat up, steering at idle becomes difficult and there is some whine. If I rev up the RPMs a bit, pressure builds and it steers...
Did the liner fail because the engine was oversped or would the liner have failed anyway? Or is there no way to know?
The whole cylinder liner issue with these engines freaks me out a little. Opinions abound. There are people who say that it rarely happens and there are people who make it sound...
How come they peeled you 939 guys off into your own forum instead of keeping you in the general 5-ton forum? Are you too cool to hang with the 809 series people? I feel like an outcast.
It was already too quiet in there, compared to the deuce forum. :(
@Coug Fantastic write-up and exactly what makes the forums so good. I will be able to follow this almost exactly, when I do this to our HMMWV.
One question:
There is a pintle/ball combination hitch that will replace the existing pintle hitch. You went with a receiver hitch. Is there such...
