Don't know if my truck is typical: the cab air bags do not inflate until AFTER the air tanks are charged.
I have some work to do on mine as the cab bounces like the truck has a flat tire. Pinned it for now (and control knob turned CCW).
I just purchased one ( thanks Steve6x!). The local differential shop will install it if I bring them the 3rd member. Technically, that should be easy. Practically, we'll see. I get the truck off camber often, its a must-have for me.
The truck is also teaching me that one cannot simply purchase an FMTV surplus then just hop in and drive it around. Its alot of work. Keeps me entertained as I am fascinated by the complexity of the hydraulic and pneumatic systems: I wonder where this hose goes.....
Mine made me pay for using the front tire as a scaffold. Banged up elbow + shoulder + ribs on the way down. Oooww. I'll be fine, back at it tomorrow, sore but wiser I reckon.
Am pulling the spare tire rack and tool box, man, there is a bunch of stuff back under there that clearly needs...
squished the toolbox
This is what happens when the chain to the spare tire is not located properly.
Its OK for now, will fix it later. Am pulling the spare tire rack to access that area for the safety cage install. From what I see, it appears that the Sealy, TX facility starts by mounting the...
Now that's a horse of a different color....the thought was to have the control in the cab just for that circuit.....will have to burn a few more grey cells.
My plan is to split the lines to control them individually then use them as "suck down winches" (parlance of the rock crawler crowd). When the truck is on a side slope, activate the cylinder on the high side to "suck down" the suspension on that side. It might be just enough to avoid a tip over...
a spare spare
If I carry no spare then I for sure will get a flat.
If I carry one spare then I will get two flats.
If I carry 2 spares, then its certain I'll never get a flat so will have carted them around for nothing. I'm good with that.
Got it weighed.
Airlift extensions removed,
2nd spare tire/wheel in the bed over the rear axle,
1/2 tank of diesel,
me (after lunch)
You can see I have some work to do to better balance front/back ratio currently 63/37.
Plan is to stick with the long leaf spring setup for now, there is soooo much to do elsewhere on the truck and the leafs work OK for now. I'm thinking the battery box & air tanks are gonna have to be relocated between the frame rails outta the way....the rocks might grab 'em in the stock...
Yes the design is intended to be effective to some degree in the case of total separation of the cab from the truck. A capsule, sort of. The thinking is
1. May not need to go as large as 2.0 x 0.250 wall tubing, since its not the case that the entire weight of the truck will be on the cab.
