Sounds like a good score and a fun project to boot! I actually kinda like the red paint job, believe it or not. Keep us posted on how any restoration work goes!
That's the reaction I get when I tell friends I want a Deuce or 5 ton as a daily driver. "You're gonna get like 5 MPG!"
"Everyone will be flipping you off on the freeway!" etc. I personally enjoy them laughing at me, since I can imagine I'll have the last laugh later when my truck can do...
...But a 6 hour Deuce trip home should be an adventure you'll remember for the rest of your life. Have you ever ridden in or been behind the wheel of one before? I have been in the driver's seat myself, but it was trying to roll-start one by being towed around by a material handler forklift...
I'm a Deuce newbie myself with little mechanical experience but it looks decent from pictures. I'd say go look at it for sure! Ask the owner to not start it the day you go look at it. If the engine is warm when you inspect it, walk away, they're hiding something. (Unless, of course, you want...
I say go for it, being in a similar situation myself. I've only just started learning to drive myself, and my first time behind the wheel of a stick shift was in a Deuce! (That's another story though). At one point it looked like I might have a '71 Deuce dumped on my lamp for free as a first...
Yeah, these trucks are just impressive and awesome in just about in every regard. Offroad capability is what got me into wanting one, but from there it was a slippery slope to seriously considering a M939 as a daily driver. People laugh at me all the time...
If nothing else, I've always...
TB58, I like the sounds of your set-up! (solar, charging batteries while driving, etc). I remember our discussions on daily-driving a Deuce up in the Fairbanks area. I'm currently looking at buying a particular piece of property outside Delta Junction but if that doesn't pan out you just gave...
"Half weird looks, half smiles"
When/if I get myself a Deuce or 5 ton, I also intend to daily-drive it, everywhere I go. I personally enjoy being laughed at when I tell people what I plan on driving...
I know these annoying new fuel cans too. The concept is great IMO but it just doesn't work. For me it's been filling portable generators with the stupid new gas cans. The spring-loaded spouts are under so much tension they "pop off" the rim of the fuel filler. Its annoying as heck.
Could be crazier, a friend has a M49 (Deuce fuel tanker) that's BRIGHT YELLOW inside and out! Cab interior and everything. With black accents. And bumblebees painted on the doors.
