Based on the Dana reference material and other books I found it is highly recommended that whatever you are bolting a driveshaft up to (at either end) must have the same angle.
Example would be if the transfer case output is at 0 degrees (horizontal), then the pinion flange on the axle would...
Looking great so far. I wish I had a shop to work in. I'm jelly!
[NOTE: For those chronologically challenged individuals (aka old farts) jelly = short form of jealous.]
Further research led me to a great resource: http://www2.dana.com/pdf/J3311-1-DSSP.pdf
Page 8 of the Dana Driveline Installation manual in the link above has been attached for reference.
Current thinking:
1) install Cummins 6BT at zero angle to match xfer case
2) adjust elevation of 6BT to...
It seems that I enjoyed taking the factory multi-fuel engine and Spicer 3053A transmission out of the deuce, but I forgot to take a few key measurements before I started the job.
I am looking to see if someone could help me determine the following measurements on a factory deuce:
1) park...
Quite the collection there. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Pardon my ignorance, but the internet has failed me tonight. Can you tell me the purpose of the drum on the front of the half track? It looks like some sort of device to help cross ditches or a winch drum or...
Tim, I got the portable crane from GL in Texas. Someone already bought it from me when I'm done with the engine/tranny swap. :D It goes up over 13 feet.
What did I do to my deuce this week? I kept cussing at it!
My deuce is resisting the Cummins 5.9L + Allison AT545 swap every step of the way.
Just when something looks easy I get pushed 2 steps back. It WILL go in and function. Oh yes...
Ripped the engine/tranny out of my deuce and started my Cummins 5.9L + Allison AT545 swap from a 1997 Freightliner Bus!
See my build thread for more...
After I removed the engine/tranny out of the donor bus I removed the deuce multi-fuel engine and Spicer 3053A transmission. I took my time and worked smarter not harder. Feel free to poke fun at me for using a 6000 lb capacity portable crane to remove bits like the front grill/brush guard. I...
So I bought a Cummins 5.9L and Allison AT545 out of a 1997 Freightliner/Thomas Bus with 46k original miles. Yes I know there is a bit of surface rust around the engine, but a quick sand and repaint will take care of that. Below are some of the pictures from removing the engine/tranny out of...
You have to worry about the turbo oiling system being a fuel source also if one of the seals goes kaput. Shutting off the air is the easiest fix to solve any fuel source problem for a runaway diesel engine.
Put one before the turbo inlet and call it a day. Peace of mind.
[EDIT: Called for...
Not trying to hijack your thread too much, but what all is required for a civilian to purchase & drive a HET? I only have a regular driver's license. What else do I need to do?
I hope to use as much as possible from the Waterloo Specialties power steering kit. The Cummins 5.9L engine has a power steering pump, so I should be able to use it. I will let you know if I have anything left over to part with.
I used an on-line gearing calculator and it told me that in 4th...
I just sealed the deal on a 1997 Cummins 5.9L engine and Allison AT545 transmission. They both have 46k miles on them. Did I mention I only paid $1400? Woo whooo!
Stay tuned for more pictures/updates as I pull the Cummins/Allison as well as the Multifuel/Spicer!
Pull your in-tank pump and check the discharge hose. Mine had a hole in the hose and it completely fell off with a touch of my finger. I replaced the hose and put better clamps on.
Here is a page dedicated to pulling my in-tank pump and repairing the damaged/loose discharge line...
