I know the M36 long wheel based deuce had the passenger side drop bed. It was explained to me that the truck was built to carry missiles and they were loaded/unloaded from that side. Seemed as good a reason as any.

I've never seen a 20 foot dropside bed on an M927 or m928 (well actually I've never seen one on an 800 series long wheel base truck either).
You may also have some issues with the bed sticking 6 feet over the back of the frame. The M927's and M928's have a reinforced frame to help...

If I had used a deuce bed (which I had just sold) the end of the bed would have been between the tandems and looked weird.

The weather forecast was for rain today but it held off so I continued to work on the modified M927.
I set the plate that the 5th wheel will ride on and did all the measuring for the holes that will need to be drilled to mount everything.
I hope there is enough room for the trailer to maneuver...

Nobody goes hungry at the Ga. Rally....if you don't want to eat roadkill stew with the CAMO crew you can come over to the MKT and do some KP and get your meals for helping out. We always have good food at the rally.
